Cuse has SEC type strength near the school...zip codes at over 80% shows how strong the program is in CNY. It does die out quickly once you get out about 75 miles.

Highly affluent. High degree of transplants. Not the kind of place you find scores of Wal-Mart fans.
If they're transplants, won't their allegiances likely lie elsewhere?

Which waters down necessary margin for plurality.

With Facebook, you can "like" multiple teams, without really being a "fan" of each team.
For instance, I am a blue-goggled, BYU homer and have at times attended multiple games each year even though I lived 1,000 miles away from Provo. I've spent $$$$ on BYU tickets, including road games all over the country. I am a Cougar Club member. I watch every minute of every BYU football and basketball game on live television. I spend $$ each year on BYU gear for myself, my wife, and my six kids. My license plate says BYU Alumni. I spend too much time reviewing BYU game reports, box scores, stats, and wasting time on BYU blogs.
But, I "like" Oregon on Facebook because I grew up in the area and have friends who have played on the Ducks' team. I went to one Ducks game when I was like 11 years old (versus BYU) and watch bits and pieces of DVR'd games may be two or three times during the regular season - when it's a big time matchup. I never have and never will buy or wear Ducks gear.
I also "like" Pepperdine sports because I attended Law School there. I went to a couple of BASEBALL games, mostly so that I could study outside instead of in the Law Library (and overlook the Pacific Ocean!). The only other Pepperdine sporting events I have ever attended have been volleyball and basketball games against BYU IN PROVO.
Yet, the "likes" all count the same.

That's it really a problem. It balances out.

My highly scientific survey finds an approximately equal mix of UNC-CH and NCSU fans with slightly less but a still large ECU base. Next would be Duke and Appalachian State. UNC by no means dominates. My survey is the number of t-shirts worn by middle school students at a large central/eastern NC location. I bet it is every bit as accurate as this NY Times map.
