Baseball Polls (w/o February 23rd)

Not quite yet, they've only been doing it for 3 weeks. But they do have very good street cred, and I don't have any major quibbles with them yet.

I've always respected the Baseball America ranking head and shoulders above any other (including the polls, RPI, and selection committee seedlings). This year with Aaron Fitt leaving BA to spearhead their new rankings and coverage (with Kendall Rogers)- d1baseball appears to have the cachet of the new de facto standard.

In my view, D1 and BA both have potential to carry the "most legit" label into 2015 and beyond. Let's discuss again after this season.

For those non-reputable polls that only look at W - L record with no analysis of who and where teams have played....

(Warrren Nolan):
84 Virginia
116 UCF
162 Wofford
201 Mississippi State
234 USC
244 Texas A&M

• Gms Away From Home
(unbeaten/untied)
6: Ohio U 6–0
6: UVa 7–0
3: UCF 7–0
2: USC 9–0
1: UNCW 6–0
1: Wofford 7–0
0: TX A&M 8–0
0: MissSt 9-0

Same old Aggies, scheduling an extreme home-baked, powderpuff schedule. And it actually gets worse-- they play at home vs. Incarnate World today, and then at home again against Dartmouth this weekend before facing teams with a pulse next week when they face DBU and then go to Minute Maid. (Note-- in fairness, Big Green are projected as co-favorites, along with Columbia, to win the Ivy League.)

Right. I'm sure Dartmouth has enjoyed unprecedented quality practice time on their diamond in Hanover, NH. I'll bet they haven't seen the bare ground or grass in 3 months up there.

This brought back a nice memory. I was trying to choose between Stanford, Rice, and Dartmouth in March/April of my senior year in HS and the deadline for choosing was approaching. Dartmouth actually flew me out there (through one of their native american programs) for a visit. I grew up in Alaska and at the time I visited Dartmouth, all the snow had melted where I lived in Alaska. While visiting Dartmouth, it snowed. This after I had visited Rice in December (completely on my own) and had walked around campus in shorts! While I had a fun weekend at Dartmouth, I quickly scratched it off the list!

They were quite nice. Definitely prefer them to the weird practice jersey with the crooked gray OER that we had on last weekend.

I had a similar experience. When I made my visit I was fascinated by the beauty and tradition of the Ivy League campus there...and completely turned off by the weather. After all, I grew up in West Texas. After that, it was a no brainer to accept at Rice

I had it narrowed down to Cornell and Rice. Went to a local (SoCal) party for prospective freshmen where they had a slide show that had a lot of snow and the host talked about hockey. Got to visit Houston in April and it was a no-brainer. Which made my return to Houston in August feel like a horrible bait and switch.

Interesting. My final choices were Rice and Cornell too. During the in person interview with the Cornell rep, at that time the St. Stephens head master, noticed several pictures on his office wall of Cornell in the winter, including students walking through head high canyons of snow. That helped seal the deal. Of course, the relative financial costs in Rice's favor didn't hurt either.
