I remember this game. Reuben Patters went for 32 pts that night, a day after his mom had died. He honored her by writing a tribute on his sneakers.

The team scored 93 pts that night.... for the younger people that post here UAB was a decent program back then.

My favorite game vs UAB was the one where Van Exel drilled a three at the buzzer after his pass down low was deflected back to him.

If any of those mid-late 90's teams had an elite PG I think UC has at least one more Final Four in their record books. From 1994 thru 1999, those teams had legit talent but never had a good PG and thus struggled to win in the NCAA tourney. Charles Williams, Michael Horton .... great guys but not good PG's. I can't even recall who else played PG other than Damon Flint who was badly out of position doing so.

And they went to the elite 8 with him. Great passer, and could really get into the lane, but my Lord I wish he could finish. If he could finish and/or make a free throw he would have been an All-American.

Legree was outstanding in the 96 tourney, played really well. Lots of assists, made his FTs, and very few if any turnovers. But I agree that PG was an issue for some time. Wish Satterfield would have stayed around.

not that i don't enjoy watching these games, but man are they depressing. that talent. christ. but how we've remained competitive could be a testament to the overall lack of soundness in general in the arena of collegiate basketball. but i don't watch college basketball anymore (outside of the cats). perhaps it's these aau leagues and the notion as the days go by sh!t just gets f@cked up. the big five are essentially fortune 500 companies. the mom and pop can exist, but only locals know about 'em. others get bought out. being a hypocrite isn't really all that bad

Ah, yes. Watched that on TV. Someone in the student section had a sign saying "X is Next" (they were our next game). I think that following Xavier game was the one where Van Exel made that almost halfcourt shot at the halftime buzzer, helping us go on to win handily.

And also for the younger people, yes, you can actually score 93 points in a single game, not just 2 combined.

That team shot 48.7% from 2 (79th nationally), 34.7% from 3 (132nd), 67.9 FT (137th), FTA 898 (5TH), 1324 TREB (17th)

That team won by being beasts on the glass and getting to the line.

These videos are awesome. I've developed a routine every night where I have been feeding my son with these old games playing on my tablet at the same time. Watching part of the games every night.

Both the 96-97 and 97-98 teams were loaded 2-5 but as somebody else mentioned were lacking in really good PG play. Those teams were still fun to watch and had all kinds of characters and names that everyone recognized. One big difference from now and then, is everybody knew who Ruben Patterson, Bobby Brannen, Mel Levitt, and Kenyon Martin were. Go around this city anymore and outside of the hardcore fans, no one knows who Caupain, Sanders, Ellis, even are. A lot of my UK, UL, and XU friends don't know these guys but can still name all of these players.

on the pg comment...so true. I remember thinking back in 1995-96 (year we went to the elite 8): if we just had D. Wheat from UofL we would go to the national title game. I remember playing UofL that year and thinking that. We were D. Wheat away from playing for a national title that year I strongly believe.

I was at that game. I remember it as being one of the most boring, crappy games I watched because it was so low scoring.

Then I realized, pretty much every game is like that anymore.

I guess that is why I am just not excited about UC basketball anymore. Sometimes I am not even aware of their next game until I come on here to see what's going on.

I used to never miss a game on TV, regardless. I arranged any plans around UC games. Now, if I happen to not be busy, I will watch, or at least catch the second half.

The first several years I hung in there because Mick said it would get better after a few years of recruiting "his" kind of players. A few years back, coming in to the season, he promised a running, high scoring team. It never happened.

I'm just at a point where I am feeling very discouraged. Year nine of the Cronin era, and I am still waiting..... Yes I have been very happy to have several mildly successful years, but it seems like UC has peaked as a mid-level team, always hovering around the 25-45 range. Some years we are good enough to be ranked in the top 25 occasionally, maybe even in to the top20. Usually we hover just outside of the top 25. It's always "wait til next year! We should be REALLY good next year".

A relatively straight line of mid-level success, with very small or no peaks, and regular dips, is just boring.

I got more enjoyment out of rooting for the first two years teams as the scrappy underdogs.

Ok, let the beatings begin....

I'm with you.

Problem is where the program is in the national landscape, this is probably as good as it gets. The 90's will seem like the 1890's

You are spot on. I kept my tickets for the first 4 or 5 years of Cronin, because I understood it would take a few years to recover from Nancy. But in really never did fully recover. The offense remains horrible, we have players that can guard but no one that can make mid range shots and the 3 point shooters are mediocre and quite variable.
