Jim McDonald was a great asset to UT but don't make it sound like he did it singlehandly. Bob Conroy recruited most of the great players and the hard-to-guard motion offense that was a huge part of all that success was all Bob Nichols.

They worked well together. An interesting fact worth noting however is that Kent was a perpetual bottom dweller that hadn't had a winning season in years until McDonald went there.

You're absolutely right, and as soon as he retired and they promoted one of his assistants (Dave Grude?), Kent went right back to the bottom of the league.

I've been a season ticket holder since I was 10 (via my dad) and I have ebeen going continuosly since '66-'67 season and this is the team I have enjoyed watching most since our '76 - '81 run.

Go Rockets!!!

I thought the year Stan's team went 14-2 (sweep MAC West) and won the MAC Regular season championship was a fun team to watch.

I agree, Stan's Regular Season Championship season was very fun. I still remember the home game against Akron at the "old" Savage. It was a battle between the two tops teams in the MAC that season. There was a great, energetic crowd with 7,900 people. Toledo won by three points and Akron attempted a game-tying three pointer at the last second, but Kashif Payne blocked it. Tino Valencia jumped up in celebration on the table where the courtside seats were. That was a huge game as it ultimately determined who the won the regular season championship.

Akron brought a huge student group that was very well organized. Kept chanting "Ooooo Oooooo Romeo" every time their guy Romeo Something scored. My daughter was really giving it to them back and forth all night. They were a lot of fun but for one foul mouthed older guy who we got kicked out. I always wished UT had an equivalent group. Apparently Akron doesn't anymore, either.

No matter how many times I look at a replay of that JD dunk, it always brings a smile to my face.

His son played point guard for the Rockets and hurdled for the track team. He stripped BG's Monk Montgomery at game's end one year leading to the game winning points, causing JohnWeinert to famously whine about the refs missing a foul on Conroy. "The knife was still in the body" was his press conference quote which shall go down in history with "The balls felt overinflated".

the dunk looked even better at the higher angle where you can better appreciate the height and power of the play.

My favorite memory of Weinert was when he ceremoniously put his jacket on to signal the game was over and BG had won - then they lost the game when Miami, Oh scored something like 11 straight points in about a minute to win the game. Memory may be off on the points and time left, but it was definitely against Miami. I also think it put an end to that little ceremony since he was so embarrassed.

You have the points and time correct. 11 in just under a minute.

My favorite moment related to Weinert (not something he did, but it was related to the coat business) is the first MAC tournament in Ann Arbor when UT dominated BG in the championship game. Won by 15, and it wasn't that close. Anyway, late in the game a group of UT fans started chanting "where's your coat? where's your coat?" 03-lmfao

And I'm sure I've mentioned these things here before, but I like to bring them up whenever I can. That game in Ann Arbor led to my second favorite quote of all time related to UT athletics, and it came from a Bowling Green Falcon, of all people. After the game BG guard Rosie Barnes said (according to the Blade article I have in a scrapbook) "they just kicked our ass. Print it."

And of course that leads to my favorite UT-related quote of all time, from Stan Joplin (in Duane Schooley's game article on March 11th, 1979): "Hey, as soon at it left my hands, I knew it was in and I'm not kidding."

My own story on that 1979 season was that I didn't even know Toledo made it to the NCAA tourney. I left for Hawaii with a friend to visit his sister and brother (who was stationed at Hickam AFB). When we left, Toledo had a game left against CMU in Mt. Pleasant. I figured they would not win that game and the season was essentially over. Next thing I know, I'm watching the news (don't think ESPN had arrived yet) and I see the game winning shot against Iowa by Joplin. I was shocked they were in the tourney and that win put them in the sweet 16 ( a lot fewer teams went to the tourney back then). They then played a very competitive game against ND and lost by 5 if I remember correctly. Still was kind of neat to see the sports on the news show the winning shot against Iowa out in Hawaii - and the feeling I had not even knowing they were in the tourney.

Those were the days when we could pretty much play against anybody in the country - except maybe the top 5.

not the angle I saw on ESPN, but if you run the top replay all the way to the end and they replay it again right at the end of the video, hit pause right after he dunks it and they show him start to run up the court. Have to do it quick - as soon as they show him after the slam. Then look at the expression on the 2nd cheerleader from the right. You could see it much better on Sports Center the morning after the game. They showed the dunk from behind him and her reaction was immediate and unmistakable....

I was at a wedding reception on game day and had a transistor radio. When Joplin hit the shot I ran to the microphone, pushed the singer aside and yelled "WeWON! We WON! Sweet Sixteen!" dead silence. My wife slid under the table and tried to crawl away. No one said a word. WhenI was at the bar several minutes later a guy came up and said "When you said "we're going to the Sweet Sixteen" what team did you mean?" And yes, the wedding and reception were in Toledo.

The Tourney only had 48 teams back then, and seeds 1 thru 8 got 1st round byes...... so ND was fresh.

checked the records. notre dame wasn't much fresher than us. the tourney was 40 teams that year. seeds 7-10 played in the first round. toledo had a lot of respect and got a 5 seed matched up against 4 seed big ten co-champ iowa in the 2nd round. we came back from 12 down at halftime. i was a little kid moving back and forth between toledo and chicago and saw the 2nd half on a little black and white tv with coat hanger antenna 200 feet from the el train and became a fan for life. joplin remains my favorite player ever. the mideast bracket was loaded. magic johnson and eventual champ michigan st was in the bracket. tourney favorite #1 seed notre dame had longtime piston kelly tripucka, the most physically imposing pf of basketball history orlando wooldridge, longtime piston bill laimbeer, and longtime nba journeyman bill hanzlik. we played them close but lost by 8. pennsylvania was the big tourney cinderella. won 4 games by an average of 3 points -iona, #1 seed n carolina, syracuse, st johns- to go to the final 4 . larry bird and indiana st were the runners up.

I remember getting up on a Saturday morning after being out late the night before and turning on the TV to see the NCAA tourney on at 9 am in Maui. That, along with it being 84 degrees out was a shock to the senses that year.
