My in-laws live in Baton Rouge. I've been there many, many times since 1988. Boston, Hartford, and Providence are much nicer.
I lived in Memphis for a few years (and traveled quite a bit around the South). There were 2 things I really missed about New England.
The first was having four distinguished (and equal length) seasons. IMO nothing beats the Fall season in New England. To me, the Memphis seasons consisted of "Nice Summer," "Unbearable Summer," and "Ice Storm Season." Much respect for Memphis residents who venture outside in August.
The second was the people. It took me a long time to get used to walking down the street and nearly every time you pass a stranger, they say hello or start up a conversation. It just felt incredibly phony to me. I prefer the New England way of keeping your head down and going about your own business.
I like traveling South for vacations, but in terms of primary residence, I am much happier in the Northeast.
Here in NC the summer is always welcome because we have tons of good beaches. As long as you have access to that, the heat isn't an issue. Summer night grilling out by the beach, forget about it.
I cannot stand cold weather, hate it. It's downright depressing. Once New Years is over with, I want it to be warm ASAP. That's why it would take a ton of $ to ever live north of here.
If I move from NC it's going to be way south ala Miami, Carribean, Latin America, or way west California.

Well, I'll take summers and all of the heat and humidity all life long, but I've had my limit of winter weather and its complications this year.

A lot of it comes down to where you've lived the majority of your life. I'm used to the cold weather, snowstorms, and winter weather complications. I'm not used to the Southern humidity, which takes a toll on me. It's probably the exact opposite for you.
Growing up, we vacationed in North Carolina (Oak Island) every summer for the month of August. I do love the Carolina beaches and spending some time in the warmer climates.

I actually prefer this too. There's this whole "Southern Hospitality" thing and I used to believe in it too. Honestly, from my experience, it's blown way out of proportion as most people are about the same everywhere you go. I think Southerners are probably nicer to your face but when it comes to acting on it they're no different than anybody else in the country. The friendliest (as in they'd go out of their way to help you) people I've been around were probably in Alberta.

I could easily see this. New England is a really nice place to be in Spring, Summer and Fall. I've been jaded on winter after experiencing 3 Canadian Rocky winters. All I can do is laugh at people in NC who b!tch about the cold or snow. They literally have no idea. The "NC cold" doesn't even bother me anymore. I'm back in NC now and I have to say I'm already dreading the hot/humid July and August.
FWIW, this comes from somebody who spent his first 28 years in NC. I've lived in NC, TN, NJ, MD and Alberta and spent a significant amount of time in NE for work.

Well I for one hate a lot of the south's mentality. I think the north in many ways is superior with their worldview, non bible clinging, etc.
That said, the weather still sucks

I will add to this, much of NC really isn't the south culturally. Well not south when compared to Louisiana, Alabama, and Mississippi.

I've lived north & south. Shoveling snow in March sucks. So does 105 degrees in August. Both places have a couple months that are awful. Otherwise, both places are very livable.

RE: 2015 Schedule Release
It is all about personal perspective. I love a lot of areas down south, but I am very passionate about skiing. Living in Boston, I have a ridiculous number of ski areas within a three hour drive of me. So, while some may find winter depressing because they are just sitting around and waiting for it to end, I am shredding a mountain almost every weekend and then out for beers at a ski bar afterward. Once spring skiing kicks in, there is no place on earth that I would rather be than in ski country. Beer and BBQ on a sun deck at the base of mountain while bands play is the best part of the year.
New England is great in summer, too. Tons of nice beaches, temps between 75 and 88 (we only get about a dozen 90+ days each summer), and clam and lobster shacks everywhere. Living here gives me a nice variety of things to do. While palm trees and endless summer may be preferred by some, I like the variety of things that you can do in each season up here. Sure, this winter is terrible during the weekdays (the worst one ever) since the snow in the city of Boston is beyond ridiculous and it makes getting around an issue. However, in the mountains, this winter is as awesome as ever.

We do snow / skiing and beaches in NC... just go from one end of the state to the other. Its really the best of both worlds and a reason Raleigh (right in between) is one of the fastest growing cities in the country.

I admire the research $ USF has been pulling in in a very short period. That is impressive and important for you guys to have a shot at the ACC.
