RE: Recruit Updates
I understand it is late in the process, and hopefully things will break, but must admit I feel almost no energy with this appointment, and my friends feel the same. I thought the announcement ceremony was fine but I did not leave Trask screaming with enthusiasm. The prospect of assistants is quite positive, other than that please tell me I am off base.

unfortunately i agree. Until we see some positive movement, I'll likely still have that feeling. It's been mostly negative since the loss to UVA!

RE: Recruit Updates
All that matters is if we win. The lack of excitement is more due to the loss of recruits than anything else. Almost anyone we hired would have been a let down based on the past 3 years of an almost unprecedented turnaround and success.
We are not going to command a "great hire" with our budget and we can't afford to guarantee a large base salary to any coach for 5 years. We have to be in a position where we can buy out an unsuccessful coach.
So, only time will tell. These new coaches are likely getting a feel for the players on the roster before they make moves to replace the lost recruits. Again, we'll have to wait. Most of us know the team and players very well, so we already know strengths, weaknesses and what types of players we need to bring on board quickly.
I'm prepared to take a wait and see approach, and give these coaches and players full support.

I second all of that. There's no sense in being a bunch of negative nancies and sitting on the edge of a cliff ready to jump over some lost recruits.
In the words of the little fella from Hook, "Ah come ooooon! Just give 'em a chance!"

I think the point is we are giving him a chance, but, the quietness leads to animosity!

RE: Recruit Updates
For UNCW, life on the recruiting trail is always quite. There was no mention of Hughes being a possibility until he signed. You can go to http://www.verbalcommits.com/schools/uncw to see guys that have offers. The staff is busy. They're working hard and we've made offers it appears.
Note, Hughes, Cole and Whitley are still listed as recruits. I'm assuming those ships have sailed, but most of the other guys weren't on the radar two weeks ago. It also specifically states on this website that Cuthbertson's status went from signed to medium interest, so I hope/think we're still in play with him. Whitley hasn't exactly had great offers come in since de-committing, so I'm hopeful he's still in play (against my better judgement).
Personally, I think the subtle criticism of the new staff is way off base.

Verbal commits doesn't offer much more than what is already known. And There has only been an addition of 2 to that list since the new staff came on. Right now i see 5 lost, no new added, a huge question mark around our best player. Now is the time to "show me"!

Two weeks on the job, of which 4 days were a recruiting dead period. Now is the 'be patient' time.

When's the last time you either changed jobs or stepped into a new role?
I'm willing to bet a little something that you didn't go all "Employee of the Year" in your first two weeks.
Patience!

There is nothing to talk about! I wasn't happy about the hire, but was willing to give him a chance. I'm an impatient yankee, sorry. Silence, IMO is not good. I know it's not the popular opinion and that's fine, but it's my opinion.
And CG switching jobs and learning a new role is entirely different from coaching. Losing all 5 recruits is = to losing the entire department i worked in when starting. If i lost my whole group when i started 2 weeks ago i'd damn sure have hired a replacement or 2 by now!

Quality of replacements be damned? You'd just fill the spots to fill the spots? That is very short-sighted. They've made offers; what would you do to make the free-market replacements accept the offer?

You weren't happy with the hire so you're verbalizing your displeasure. I'm perfectly fine with that, but don't pretend that you gave the staff a chance.

I haven't thrown in the towel on the guy, so I feel like I am giving him one. Sorry I'd expect to see something by now. Clearly I'm not as patient as some of you.
In regards to being short sighted, i don't agree. If he had grabbed a Juco or a Grad transfer at this point that would fill holes short term and still have scollys open when he has a full year to recruit. Maybe he is, but we don't know because we have heard very little.

It's all about your perception. You're praising Keatts for signing one four-star and a guy that was suspended middle of the season by Baylor last year. Yes, Baylor, who pretty much says nothing is off limits to their student athletes. Scott Drew isn't exactly known as a disciplinarian and Freeman really struggled once conference play started. Meanwhile, State has three guys that are considering transferring, one who decided to forgo two seasons in college to play basketball in Europe and one that left the team to be a late lottery pick. Everyone assumed DSJ would be gone, so there's certainly no shame there, but things are hardly going great for Keatts, yet you said yesterday, he's off to a fast start. It's all about YOUR perception. You think Keatts is going to do well, so every move he makes seems like a move in the right direction. You perceive the McGrath hire as a mistake, so you assume no news means doom and destruction of the entire program.

Look back, I didn't say he was off to a fast start, that was someone else. I did state that I thought the guy from Baylor was a good get and i stand by that based on on the court talent alone. The thing is though there IS activity there to measure.

Heard the kid from Whiteville is considering leaving NCSU-Shaun Kirk. Got very little playing time in 2 years.
You gotta give the UNCW guy a chance and at this point it is pretty much a waste of time to even talk about it.
