Greatest MAC performer
Every once in a while I trot out this video because it just fires me up. It's [one of] the best performances by a MAC athlete ever.

Awesome! I couldn't agree more, simply awesome.

RE: Greatest MAC performer
Well, Hasley Crawford could lay claim to that honor as well, but Wottle ran a perfect race and certainly makes an argument.

RE: Greatest MAC performer
I certainly agree that what Dave Wottle did was fantastic.

I am throwing out another outstanding run by another MAC runner.

Prior to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, no American had ever medaled in the 5000 meter. At Tokyo, Americans finished first & third, and no American has medaled since.

Bob Shul is the only American to win the Olympic 5000 meter run.

Didn't realize Shul attended Miami. Thanks! Another great MAC performance. orel Hershiser from BG who eclipsed Whitey Ford's WS scoreless streak gets consideration, although not strictly A performance. The receiver from Marshall had some great ones as well. But Crawford, Wottle and Shul all won O gold in individual sports which probably trumps any team sport performance. Tinker is the only other gold medalist I recall but he ran a leg of the 4x100 and had teammates helping him, although that group did set a world record.

Hayes Jones (EMU) won a bronze then a gold in the hurdles in two different Olympics

Yep. But he never competed in the MAC. EMU came on board in 72, IIRC, and Jones was in the early 60s. Great performances nonetheless.

Dan Majerle won the MVP of the USA Hoops Team. Certainly takes a back seat to the individual exploits described above. (Plus the USA got smoked by an excellent Soviet team, which led to college players being replaced by the pros.)

IIRC, they played against an NBA all-star team prior to the Olympics and Majerle threw one down about five seconds into the game. It was over Michael Adams, to be true, but still....

You might like to consider Ira Murchison...Gold medal winner 1956 Olympics.. 4x100 relay held in Melbourne.
He also won the NCAA 100 yard dash in 1958....
Check him out.

Along the same lines, every time I see a Yellow and Blue Block M here in South Carolina, I always say, "So you're a Minnesota fan?". Drives the Michigan fans nuts!

Wally Szczerbiak scored 43 or Miami's 59 points in a 59-58 upset of Washington in the NCAA tournament in 1999.

Not so much individual accomplishment but team. Lake Placid was nice to BG in the early to mid 80s and these two events bookended my BG experience.

In 1980 Ken Morrow and Mark Wells skate to Olympic Gold in the miracle on ice. Then a few years later after being ranked 2nd in the nation and snubbed by the selection committee in 83 (lost to MSU in the CCHA final), BG wins the 84 national championship over Minnesota Duluth in 3 OT at Lake Placid. Incidentally, Minnesota Duluth was the team picked over BG the year before for the at large bid (IIRC).

Neither Szcerbiak nor BG come close really. MAC has had lots of NCAA champs and great college performances. Wattle, Crawford, Shul, etc. took on the WORLD and won.
