Rhoades got Mency and the ASU transfer in 1st and has some sizzle in the 2nd.

Pollard was also a Rhoades recruit.

Guercy got Freshman-otW 5 times in '12-13.
Kazemi was the last Owl to get PotW, on 1/16/12.

Kuipers was Wilson's recruit -- my days of being a Wilson supporter were long, long, long gone by 2008, but credit where it's due.

I don't think there's anything special about a coach's 3rd recruiting class. Oraby doesn't show up on rivals, but he was part of that 2010 class. I'd still agree that it was Braun's worst class, but he didn't have a single class where more than half of his recruits stuck around. I recognize that some attrition is normal, especially these days in basketball, but that was ridiculous.

The more immediate crucial things for Rhoades, IMO, are:
1. Not having any more attrition among current contributors.
2. This year's signees panning out.

Mency has been FotW twice this season, according to the link above.

Yep. And if he gets to campus, stays, and is joined by at least one classmate who gets measurable minutes as a freshman, it's hard to imagine us not being pretty salty that year.

He will almost assuredly come here. He visited Oklahoma last weekend, and felt guilty since his heart was at Rice, and told the Sooner coaching staff that before he left Norman.

RE: Rice vs UAB
There is absolutely no way I would have predicted that Rice would be 6 and 6 in conference at this point in the season. I really credit the coaching staff for getting this level of talent to compete as well as they have so far. After I opined (in this forum) that Max Guercy had plateaued in his development, he strung together two very solid games and was a key factor in both double OT wins at home. Granted, UAB did not have the type of point guards that Max typically struggles against, but he took advantage of the situation and made a real difference on the court. In fact, Rice matched up quite well overall against the Blazers. This is the team I would like Rice to play against in the first round of the tournament!

Marcus Jackson and Bishop Mency had horrible shooting performances against UAB, but Marcus did not shut down and he hit a critical 3-pointer to keep the Owls in the game during the first OT period.

Now that the loss of Denzel Davis from the team seems to be confirmed, there seems to be another scholarship slot that can be used for 2015. Perhaps Rice can take advantage of a solid transfer in the mold of some of the transfer players that have been attracted to Iowa State, but it needs to be someone that fits into the Rice culture as well as has the ability to contribute immediately and not sit out a year. This team needs depth now (and also next year).

I am also wondering if Jeremy Jones will compete on the basketball team after 2014/2015 season? He has really contributed in the post to help out Andrew Drone and took a bunch of minutes away from Nate Pollard. Nonetheless he is a football recruit and next year he will be competing for PT with the other QB/RB/WR's. Can he really be a two sport player? Also, I have been hearing incredible things about the basketball skills of the Owls 380 pound offensive lineman recruit Isaiah Edwards out of Cinco Ranch in Katy. Would there be any possibility that Coach Bailiff would let him compete for minutes on the basketball court during his first season on campus?

No offense, OCO, but it's not really much to brag about. I mean, the woman's 88. And is well-known for turnovers herself, especially apple and cherry.

Hope you mean second round.. I want Rice playing a bottom-dweller in the first round. :)

If the tourney started tomorrow, here's what the seedings would look like:

1st round bye: (1) LaTech, (2) UTEP, (3) WKU, (4) UAB
(5) ODU vs. (12) Charlotte
(6) UTSA vs. (11) UNT
(7) Rice vs. (10) Marshall
(8) MT vs. (9) FIU

There's only 2 games separating 5 from 11, though .. ODU is 7-5, FIU/NT/Marshall are all 5-7. Lot of basketball yet to play.

It's hard to think back now given how much Gearhart has improved, but pre season were we the least talented roster in the conference? Especially if I tell you that Davis and Rivers would not be playing in conference.

Folks who have seen the games--is there a team that we have more talent than?

Rhoades is living up to Bum Phillips definition of a great coach

We really lose the eye test against every team we play (the ones I've seen at home). Considering we were picked to finish last I'd say it's reasonable to think we had one of the least talented teams to start the season. Luckily Seth's development has been incredible and we play with great energy and heart!
