Yeah he probably saw the writing on the wall and with his safety net in Jacobs gone and a new president on the horizon he's outta here. He has bounced all around campus post merger, drawing a huge salary and not really being effective at anything. They can open a door and let him and his ego go. Not one of my most favorite administrators. I just cringe when every time they would announce tie one on over the savage loudspeakers and say "created by LB." Who cares? It's a charity event. Do it for the cause, not the ego boost.

Other than scarlborough, it's an interesting move. He's a detroit guy, spent 20+ yrs in metro toledo, now he is going to akron to be their chief fundraiser we he presumably knows 2 people. UT's VP of institutional advancement job (same job) is open as well but won't be filled until president is hired. See post above for why he would throw his hat in the ring, not that I would want him to. Fundraising isn't easy, and to me it's a strange move at this point in his career other than to get the hell out of dodge. He used to run the foundation at muo, but it was a tiny endowment.

I'm always suspicious about folks who seem more important than their job, employer, team, etc. LB was certainly that way IMO. My only dealing with him was years ago when he wanted my employer to give MCO a huge amount of $$ for some building. The folks I brought into town from NYC to discuss the "opportunity" were lets say, "not impressed with his approach" as they put it. He certainly did get the UT word out in Detroit and Mich which I think is great. Not sure how much $$ it cost us. He made a comment at Downtown Coaches that he was working on a deal with the Indians but "ran out of money". He has recruited a number of young folks on the campus to his team and I wonder now what they will do. His value certainly would seem to be limited at AU given his long history and roots in Toledo and Detroit.

I imagine he'll try the same thing at Akron, probably what he's been hired to do. If he can get Akron adverts up at Cleveland and/or Pittsburgh games, he's done a heck of a thing. There seems to be more money and big-names supporting Akron than Toledo. I think they are probably an under-valued university. I've met a lot who don't like the atmosphere or setting of the school but from what I've seen, it has all the potential of a good off-campus being close to the city center. They've built some terrific complexes on campus.

Any idiot can spend the university's money. It is a real skill to raise money and be genuine about the cause. With Larry over at UA, I don't think UT has to worry too much about him dipping into the pool of available donor funds. Actually this move might work to our advantage. As external affairs guy he loved to look the the big shot with a bankroll, but not sure there was much strategy substance there? Jacobs gave him free reign.

Well, I don't know how good he was at his job; I'll just be glad not to have to look at his suits anymore.
