Broadcast of 1st Game at the Shoe
Mo posted this gem on his blog. Here is the broadcast of the first game at the Shoe back in 1989. It was hilarious to watch a young Huggs, the cheesy broadcast and commericals and the hair.

Huggs came in talking a big game. Said UC was going to get it turned around quickly. Made no bones about it and that they did.

Derek Dickey is a former player that many forget to mention when discussing UC greats.

Nobody was a smooth around the basket and finished as strong as he did.

He was one of my first favorite UC players. I got his autograph as well as Lloyd Batts at the Armory Fieldhouse at a UC scrimmage our youth basketball team went to.

My wife and I were also very lucky to be at that first game. We were in the upper deck and had a great view of Steve Sanders game winning shot.

More than a few of you weren't born yet.

Late arriving U C crowd. Some things never change.

Chuck Machock looking young, and was that Steve Moeller?

What ever happened to Tom Kelly?

I saw the back of my much younger head. 03-cloud9

Seems graphics were not a priority.

My how the game has changed.

How crazy is it that UC even got that shot at the end? Terrible turnover gave the ball back the Minnesota with clock running down and Minnesota inexplicably throws the ball away all the way down the court under UC's basket. Great shot for the win though, what a moment.

What a silly foul by Lou Banks at the end, almost cost us the game.

Also, not so sure the home court time keeper didn't give us that final shot. Looked to me like the clock hit 0:00 before that ball hit out of bounds on the Minnesota turnover.

Brian Kelly had that attitude as well. He came in and said "We are going to win, TODAY". Then he did it.

Love that about both of them. They both had this attitude of "failure not an option".

I see the down the drive cheer has improved greatly since then. Now if only the bonehead students would stop rushing it.

I love the 80's. Nobody had coordinated gear at the games.

Half-time presentation labels Dabney and French Halls as Laurence Hall. Somebody didn't do their homework.

RE: Broadcast of 1st Game at the Shoe
Nice post Clifton. Brings back a lot of memories since I was a student at UC during that time. $32 million Shoemaker Center in 1989 dollars. A 36 year old, trim Huggs in a suit. LOL. Gets a tee in the game - imagine that. He removed his suit jacket after the technical and the crowd roars. Love the halftime interview too:

In reference to Huggs trying to bring back the winning ways of UC basketball:
Q. "Are you asking for patience?"
A. "No. I don't have a whole lot of patience. So, I don't know why anyone else should have any." (Stated in Huggs' classic monotone style).

Forgot about the shot from Sanders to end the game. The Shoe was opened with a bang!

RE: Broadcast of 1st Game at the Shoe
I remember it well. I suffering thru the Tony Yates era as a student and joined UCATS the day after Bob Huggins was named coach. This was the first game for Huggins, the Shoemaker Center and me as a member of UCATS.
