Famous for biting that towel on the sideline. RIP Tark.

"The NCAA is so mad at Kentucky that it put Cleveland State on two more years' probation." Perfect encapsulation of the NCAA Committee on Infractions.

RIP. What a rough month for college basketball. Now the Tark and Coach Smith are running plays with Coach Haskins and Coach Wooden.

R.I.P.

Another guy who passed away this week but has really gotten overlooked (as he did for his whole career) is golfing great Billy Casper.

He was quoted as saying this in LB telegram. "Kentucky basketball breaks more rules in a day then Western Kentucky does in a year."

Always enjoyed watching his teams pay back in the day at UNLV...Always was fast break basketball played the way it should it be, fast paced...

I was in Vegas for a tournament back in the 80's when Georgetown, Clemson, UNLV and Marshall played. It was the 2nd week of existence of the Thomas & Mack Center.
What a spectacle. UNLV was running and gunning, Patrick Ewing was dunking and the UNLV dance team was gorgeous.
It was show time from the time you entered the arena until the lights went out.

Hate they lost to Duke though. I still scratch my head over that loss.

I posted this on the Rice board too. His Fresno State team played at Rice one year and I don't believe I've ever seen a larger coaching staff/posse than the one Tark brought to Autry Court. Several of them looked like they could have been cast in any mobsters film too. I think Tark was mostly letting his son coach at that point of his career but he was still a blast to watch.

Another thing I recall about him was he was in the poker scene in Honeymoon in Vegas.

RE: First Dean, Now Tark. Former UNLV coach passes away at 84.
My all time favorite Collegiate Basketball Coach...His UNLV teams were so exciting to watch, especially that 1990 and 91 squad! Coach Tark did me a couple of good turns a while back, after they won it all in 1990, I was so overjoyed for them, I wrote him a letter to congratulate him and his team...A week and a half later, he writes me back...I still have that letter in one of my photo albums to this day. A year later, I decide to get back into coaching youth basketball, and I wanted to teach the players of any team I had to work with that awesome "Amoeba" defense that Coach Tark created. So, I wrote him again to ask him if he had any kind of publication on how to play that defense. 2 weeks later, I got a package in the mail from him, a manual on the theory of the "Amoeba" defense, chapter and verse! I used it for one season with my young charges, then decided to pass it on to the basketball coach of my high school alma mater when I heard his team was in the state playoffs. The following season, his team made it to the state semifinals, I went to the venue (BJCC) to cheer them on, they were trailing at halftime. But they pulled a surprise to my eyes in that 2nd half, he had his players using that "Amoeba" defense on their opponents, and literally shut them down for an entire quarter, and went on to win the game by a large margin. My high school coach actually used that manual and his players played that defense like a mirror image of Coach Tark's UNLV squad. For as long as I've been a fan of sports, I've had some amazing occurrences along the way, sharing correspondence and getting advice and support from the likes of Coach Jerry Tarkanian is something I'll cherish for as long as I live. May God embrace his spirit...

I think Tark's battles with the NCAA was even more challenging than getting to the Final Four.

Someone help me remember the kid's name out of Ohio who played for Tark at Long Beach State back in the early 70's. Cajun Coach Shipley went up there to recruit him but lost out to Tark. Shipley's consolation prize was his teamate, Bo Lamar.
