There's enough talent to grab locally to field a S16 team 3 out of 4 years. It's almost as if you have to go out of your way to be as bad as Pastner is. I'll take anyone with Div1 experience. I think that leaves Wilfong out though.

Big time playing experience at the highest level along side these other attributes is few and far between.

NO.

And NO to Penny.

Clyde Drexler was a lousy coach. Isaiah Thomas sucks too. Larry Finch was a great recruiter, mentor, father figure, boss, teacher, and friend--but he wasn't a great coach.

If we're going to throw wild names out there, Murry Bartow is respectable, experienced, and gets more out of less every year. He knows the lay of the land, too.

Tony Barbee wasn't completely at fault with what went wrong at Auburn. He deserves another chance.

It's too damn bad that Verties Sails is over 70. He would've been the best choice after Tic Price left.

Take it to the bank- John is not qualified at this point and wouldn't be interested I fairly certain. Probably could take the pay cut. LOL

I would still hire Sails---how old is Brown ?-----but NEVER NEVER NEVER Barbee.

Call Buzz, Shaka, Marshall, Archie Miller.
Email Avery Johnson
Then call Damon Stoudamire, and yes.. Bruce Pearl

We'll have options. I don't think Tier 1 says yes. I am intrigued with Avery, always have been. The third list would all take it and succeed.

I'd take Derek Kellogg over Barbee.

IMO, a new hire HAS to be a proven coach at a winning program. No more chances or rolling the dice. Hire a guy who has/is winning.

All four would be good choices. No to Avery and Stoudarmire. We need a proven college head coach. Utah has a good coach, done very well at two different schools. He would be a good hire

We've already tried the no coaching experience thing

Oh, speaking of Wilfong, I forgot to post that a local Dallas TV station ran a great interview with little Wilfong out here at SMU. Seems he had a dunk in a game and is gaining a fan base of his own.

And if John's credentials are good, what about Penny?

RE: Just thinking out loud....
Memphis can do a lot worse than Pastner. So don't think things will necessarily get better if they get rid of him.

On the other hand, there's the possibility that if they get the right guy, they might do better.

For all of Pastner's faults, I think everyone's frustration boils down to two things: No S16s (though he's been within a game of it), and too many poor performances against ranked teams. All other criticisms I've heard are projections of those two things.

IMO, being nationally relevant means either beating your fair share of ranked opponents and/or making runs in the tournament (S16 or better). Even though Pastner has led the Tigers to the tournament in the previous four seasons and had them ranked, I still say they weren't nationally relevant because of too many beat downs against big boy teams on natty TV and bad losses in the tournament.

Historically, Memphis has popped in and out of national relevancy because of S16 runs every few years and really good seasons overall every few years. With Pastner, it looks like he can't get that done. So even though he's not the worst of the worst, he's not what Memphis fans have come to expect.
