She's led to a lot of wasted food in school cafeterias.

I see the usual suspects on this board haven't defended her yet.

Her whole school lunch program overhaul has been a failure.

I would be one of the people more likely to support her. I think this is all going way overboard though.

Shes not wrong. The stuff is terrible for you, and food that like is a reason Americans are getting fat. That being said, there really isn't much we can do about it.

As to "real" food being too expensive, my grocery bill is about $130 per month and I only buy produce, meat, eggs, and a loaf of bread every week. That is compared to $200 when I used to buy packaged and processed food.

Kraft Mac and Cheese has been around since 1937. I doubt it has anything to do with Americans getting fat.

If you're eating the stuff every day, sure. An occasional box of it won't do anything. And what is in processed foods that would make someone fat?

If people ate packaged stuff like that only on occasion, sure it won't kill you. Just as having a delivery pizza once every few weeks won't kill you. But many people eat this "convenient food" for every meal. Sugary cereal for breakfast, fast food for lunch, then a boxed Hamburger Helper type thing for dinner. That stuff starts to add up.

Back in the 30s and 40s, I bet kids weren't eating Kraft Mac and Cheese that often, their moms were probably making real mac and cheese.

Since the food is broken down prior to eating, the calories (and other nutrients) are more readily available (and easier digested) than if it was whole, natural foods (and no I don't mean organic, screw that noise).

I'm not suggesting ban it, but American need a better diet, science shows that. It's not coincidence we are all getting fatter as packaged food is easier to come by and we sit on our butts all day.

I think it has more to do with inactivity and a TV/Video game/Smart Phone/Internet culture. Kids need to be active. Too many of them are not. Healthy eating combined with inactivity is worse than unhealthy eating combined with an active lifestyle, IMO.

It would definitely not be a good mainstay for a diet. That's because it's high in carbohydrates and calories and doesn't have good vitamin and mineral content. It has nothing to do with it being "processed food", which is a complete nonsense term in the way most people us it.

Powdered cheese is just cheese that is dried out so that it can be stored at room temperature and doesn't need to be refrigerated. It's not like it's something synthesized from inorganic chemicals in a lab.

I honestly wonder if Michelle Obama understands how cheese or pasta is made. Guess I couldn't hold it too much against her if she didn't. A lot of otherwise intelligent Americans fall for the fallacy of "natural" versus "processed" food.

Science doesn't know what we should eat. They pretend like they do, but it changes every 6 months. I would think that the weight gain has less to do with processed foods than sitting around all day.

Just this morning I heard on the radio about a study that we shouldn't avoid fat (not that new) or even red meat.

I can't speak for the 30s and 40s, but the only difference between the 80s and today is the inactivity.

You lose weight in the kitchen, you get in shape in the gym.

I agree kids need to be more active, but spending 30 minutes in the kitchen preparing a healthy meal is most likely better for you (in terms of caloric deficit)than 30 minutes of exercise.

Calories and carbohydrates are needed fuel. They only become a negative on the body when stored and not used. I read somewhere that Michael Phelps was consuming some 12,000 calories per day when he was training for the Olympics.

What a dumb ass. Does this mean that I'm not really drinking hot chocolate too?

My diet, I avoid sugar. Other than that, within reason.

It isn't that difficult. Americans today just have very little willpower when it comes to food and they are sold all sorts of **** about what they eat.

But, you wanna see the difference, the cookie isle is its own isle folks. That's not good.
