Candidates to replace UAB
Apparently could include UAB:

http://nyti.ms/1IyQjkJ

They have formed a task group to evaluate whether to bring back football. The recommendation is due on April 2.

RE: Candidates to replace UAB
I hope they keep UAB in the conference. But even if they add football back, I'm not sure it would be wise to put UAB's football team in C-USA. It may take a long time for that program to be competitive again and I think the conference might be better suited to add someone else for football - especially if it's for football only.

I don't want anyone for football only, or anyone except football, and I'm not fond of anyone for any other sport only. CUSA has enough problems already with conference identity. Being 10 different conferences for 10 different sports is the road you embark upon with things like football-only members, and that is not the way to go.

How do you even try to build rivalries if you don't play each other in half your sports?

The best thing for the conference is for UAB to bring back football in 2016. They'd be able to keep their coach and most players. No one would have to be added to the conference unless the presidents decided to go to 16 at some point.

The players are already gone (they were allowed to transfer without penalty), but the coach is still around. I'm not sure how much of his staff he has retained.

ETA: 50+ players have transferred already. This site is maintaining a list.

wow. 15 players to just two schools--Georgia State and South Alabama.

I guess they just take the place of jucos whom those schools would otherwise have recruited.

Wow. I had no idea. They'd be starting from scratch. They probably need to play a couple seasons in FCS before coming up.

Has a school ever given itself the death penalty before? What a ridiculous situation.

In Sept. 2010, Cal announced that they were going to eliminate baseball (along with several other sports) and then in April 2011 announced that baseball boosters had raised enough money to keep it after all. All of the other sports to be cut also managed to raise enough money to keep going.

IIRC, Cal lost most of their baseball players when that happened. Baseball is of a nature that it's easier to build the program back up within 2 years, but it's devastating for football.

Nope. Cal made it to the CWS in 2011. They may have lost some recruits, but they did not lose current players.
