The American Bar Association, meeting in New Orleans, approved the accreditation of the Memphis State University Law School. The school was established in September, 1962 with 80 students and expanded to 200 students in its second year of operation, and it was considered very unusual for a school to receive full ABA accreditation in such a short period of time. MSU Law became the third accredited law school in the state (UT-K and Vanderbilt). On March 4, 1977, the Board of Regents renamed the law school the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. In September, 2010 operations relocated to the former Customs House in downtown Memphis, giving the Humphreys School of Law one of the finest facilities in the nation.

I hope to be sending my daughter there this fall. If so, she would be the 3rd generation in my family to get a law degree from Memphis.

In a way, the law school is much older than that. Prior to the law school's founding, there were several other law schools in Memphis, including Memphis Law School, and Southern Law School, both of which subsequently merged with Memphis State University Law School. Memphis Law School existed as early as 1922 as the University of Memphis School of Law. Ironically, 70 years later, the name fit again.

UofM's Herff College of Engineering was also founded in the mid-60's. Had it not, I would probably never have lived in Memphis.

Law school?...Hhmmm....My University of Memphis Law School story
can be labeled in the useless information category....We were checking into the Holiday Inn University of Memphis some years ago and my wife struck up a conversation with this college age girl who said she was just waiting on her father who was parking the car...When her dad came in I realized the girl who we were talking to {who was enrolled in The University of Memphis School of Law} was the daughter of Auburn offensive line coach Hugh Nall...Just a little piece of useless information {or my only brush with our school of law} for the readers on this fine day.
