RIP Dean Smith
http://myfox8.com/2015/02/08/retired-unc...ies-at-83/
We all know Dean Smith, but:
"Smith was the head coach of UNC from 1961 to 1997, retiring as the winningest coach in college basketball. He led the Tar Heels to national championships in 1982 and 1993, to 13 ACC Tournament titles, 11 Final Fours, and an NIT championship, and directed the United States Olympic Team to a gold medal at the 1976 Summer Games."

Re: RIP Dean Smith
Its a sad day for basketball. Smith was a legend of the game & no doubt one of the all time greats.

If I'm inclined to be critical, I'd compare him to another all-timer, Bobby Bowden. Both recruited enough talent to win 6-7 national titles, but fell far short of that.

Just shows how hard it is to do.

Great, classy guy. As Melky wrote on the other board, he never lost his cool on the bench, and was always a great role model and teacher. Never berated the refs and never screamed at his players.
And even with his amazing string of accomplishments, his most important contribution was integrating the ACC. Charlie Scott was the first African American to play ACC hoops in the late 60's.

RE: RIP Dean Smith
I was watching the Lakers pregame show and heard James Worthy's commentary on Coach Smith. Worthy said that Coach Smith was a man you could turn to as a friend for advice in life. He and the rest of the Tar Heels really wanted that '82 championship for Coach Smith. Worthy then reflected back on his rookie year with the Lakers; he was in the hospital after breaking his leg, he looked up and there was Dean Smith. Another thing he said about Smith was that you could meet him at the airport for 30 seconds and he would learn everything about you and your family, then you run into him 15 years later and he'd remember everything.
As an aside, SI really wanted Michael Jordan on the cover of SI during his freshman year in 1981 and Coach Smith denied it. He also had Jordan carry around a projector (guess freshmen weren't given much thought those days).

Nothing like a big lie to live forever.
The first black basketball player in the ACC was Billy Jones at MD in 1965. The first black football in the ACC was Darryl Hill at MD in 1963.
Funny how the media seems to forget that, and how UNC now claims to have integrated the ACC.

Sorry, i didn't know that about Maryland. Thanks for pointing it out. I was always under the impression that it was Dean Smith, and articles that i read today mentioned the same thing.
Here's an article about ACC integration (wow, from 10 years ago), and yes, the Maryland players broke the barrier. Funny that it also mentions that Charlie Scott is incorrectly believed to be the first African American player...

Michael Jordan said that other than his parents, no one had a bigger influence in his life than Dean Smith. He was like a father figure to Jordan, and I'm sure a lot of the Tar Heels who played for Smith would say it also.

Not really.
And he was too busy yelling at other team's players to yell at his.

Classy Guy that will be known forever for the 4 Corner offense that also contributed to the 45 second time clock being instilled that really changed the game. R.I.P. Dean Smith

It's ok, there's lots of lies like that told. Like the lie that Texas Western winning the title in 1966 shocked the world because they had 5 black starters.
The Cincinnati Bearcats won the national title in 1962 with 4 black starters, and even that didn't really *shock* anyone who knew the game. The reason everyone was *shocked* that Texas Western won was because it was Texas Western, which was a tiny 2nd rank school at the time.

Oh, Rick Barnes knew how to get under Dean Smith's skin. : )

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The nasty words exchanged between North Carolina and Clemson during the regular season spilled over into their ACC tournament quarterfinal last night at the Greensboro Coliseum.
It led to a heated sideline exchange between coaches Dean Smith and Rick Barnes and into a near-brawl between the teams at the end of the Tar Heels' 78-62 victory. http://articles.baltimoresun.com/1995-03...ith-barnes

1994-1995 is an example of what I was saying: Look at talent Smith had on that team compared to the other Final 4 teams. He should have won it easily, instead got bounced without a win.

RE: RIP Dean Smith
I've said this many times, but I often hear people say that he didn't have many National Championships, but you have to remember, for the first couple decades of his coaching you had to win the ACC tournament just to make the NCAA tournament, they didn't have at large bids and the tournament field was much smaller. South Carolina actually left the ACC in large part due to the fact they had the number 1 ranked basketball team and failed to win the ACC tournament so they never made it to the NCAA tournament. This also worked to UCLA's advantage when it was winning all those titles.

RE: RIP Dean Smith
UCLA under Wooden had an absolute cakewalk to the Final Four most years, especially since the one conference that had anyone that could put up a fight against them, the Pac-8, was like every other conference unable to send more than one team. And that one team was 10/10 UCLA.

OK, but in fairness, nobody was going to beat any of those UCLA teams anyway. You're not going to beat freaking Lew Alcindor for crissakes.
