I'm shocked. A true legend in basketball. May he rest in peace.

While I respect Coach Smith a great deal and am saddened over his passing, this topic is in no way, shape or form Tiger related.

I was going to add a comment about the time North Carolina played Tigers, but we have never played North Carolina.

Lately the Tigers are not Tiger related.

The only thing I disagreed with was holding the ball too early back in the day. Love his other innovations however.

Dean Smith's #1 basketball innovation - the Shot Clock!
If it weren't for his 4-corners offense, college basketball may not have needed a shot clock.

I believe Dean Smith was also the first, or one of the first, to implement the mass substitutions.

Like Tulane in the 90s with "the Posse" or Cal with his platoon situation now.

I think it was/is referred to as the North Carolina substitution.

The Blue team. They'd play about 3-4 minutes and would then come out. It was usually upperclassmen who normally wouldn't play a lot. He said they knew they would get those minutes and that it kept players paying attention. Plus since they knew they were getting that 3-4 minutes they weren't worried about getting their numbers. They just played a team game. Hard to do this now though.
