WKU is 100+ in Sagarin.
This is a great win, but still 2-3 quantum levels short of TSU winning at Michigan State.
???? Did you mean Appalachian State beating Michigan in football (or TSU beating Rice in baseball)?
Since I don't follow college basketball at all other than Rice, I'm guessing TSU beat Michigan State in basketball recently?
He sure did! Dec. 20, 2014: Texas Southern 71 - #25 Michigan State 64 (OT).
And here is a link to your own post, Rick, in the Parliament thread titled "OT-Texas Southern at Michigan State, Basketball".
LOL
That speaks to the power/value of signature wins in basketball with regard to staying power in the national consciousness.
Or maybe the memory of middle-aged men.
The rule of thumb I was taught in advertising is a minimum of seven separate impressions, spaced reasonably close together, to make a mark with a consumer, change a perception and/or establish a brand identity. You are correct that it will take more than just one or two in each sport to do the trick. And the key is they have to come without too much space inn between them. That explains why people nationally do generally recognize Rice as having "pretty good baseball," but few other than us remember things like the Texas win way back in 1994.
The Appalachian State/Michigan game is a notable exception to this, as it was such a difference in the two programs and came on the road against a perceived powerhouse. Although, Michigan has been on a downhill trend more or less since around the time of that game, at least as far as my impression takes me.
This can also be applied to perceptions of coaches vs reality, when i think about it. Example, Coach Rhoades is so far a "losing coach" here at Rice by technical standards. He has only been here a short time. Yet almost every single impression he makes has been one to establish the idea he is a "winner' and will be transformational: pedigree from VCU, Navy SEAL training and videos posted, comments and demeanor in pre-season practice videos posted for all to see, statements of high expectations, exceeding where Rice has been in basketball since 1970 from the beginning in early interviews, open and aggressive attitude in every pre- and post- game interview so far that I have heard (and I have not heard them all, so I can't say for sure definitively on that one), players on the coaches show mimicking his rhetoric in their statements, The Charlotte road win, now the WKU road win, which seems at the moment bigger than it is, as it came against the number one team in conference at the time, etc... Although he won his first game against a weak Prairie View, he has lost some games to some bad teams in his very first season, one where he announced from the beginning he would install a radical change in playing style, philosophy and expectations from what had been here before; he has oft repeated the mantras of "no excuses" and "it is what it is' when referring to his thin and depleted first year squad and he has been open about his disappointment and how it does not match his expectations as far as level of play and effort. He had openly issued a challenge to Seth Gearhart that he did not want him to wait forever for his 30point game which he knew he had in him; Marcus Jackson has recently said the coaches have told him his defense has gone from "horrible to merely bad, etc..."
I could go on, but the general idea is that his trend has appeared to telegraph "winner" consistently, with little diversion from that theme so far.
I have not followed Wayne Graham to the same extent, but the parts I have seen and heard over the years seem to generally mimic how Rhoades is approaching his job. Most of the posts here on the board by those I consider the "baseball guys' seem to agree with that impression.
I'll continue the discussion for those who are interested in the football comparison in the Transformation thread, where it would seem to belong, so as not to derail this thread from basketball:
