Michigan man who walks 21 miles to work given new car
[Image: 2ns7squ.jpg]

What a great story. What a great American....He walked 21 miles a day to and from work everyday for 10 years.

Quote:The banker in a suit and wingtips had been passing Robertson — in work boots — day after day, mile after mile, for a couple of years, when finally Pollock pulled over one day, pushed open the door and offered the stranger a lift. Gradually, he came to know Robertson's schedule, then his name.

Come to find out Robertson had been taking the bus from Detroit to a location near Somerset Collections in Troy, then walking more than seven miles to work and a little more than 13 miles back home in the dark — for 10 years. His older model Honda died on him, and at $10.55 an hour and Detroit's insurance rates, he couldn't afford to replace it.

Paying for insurance for his new car shouldn't be a challenge. An online fund-raising effort has generated more than $312,000, thanks to the generosity of 19-year old Evan Leedy of
The GoFundMe site will be closed down on Sunday because "he really has enough, we think, to take care of his needs," Leedy said, as his parents stood nearby, smiling at the media crowd around their son.

The money will be earmarked for years of Robertson's car insurance and maintenance, as well as health and dental care and "other things that we can't predict right now," Pollock said.

Robertson said he was aware of the accumulating cash but said, "I"m not really worried about it — as long as somebody don't try to steal it. Blake's got some friends who's going to handle it."

Insurance quotes for keeping the car in central Detroit ranged as high as $900 a month for Robertson, who has a perfect driving record according to the Michigan Secretary of State's Office. Pollock found a relative bargain at about $400 a month — nearly $5,000 a year, he said. A national study last week put Detroit's average rate at $5,000 a year.

Pollock said he was assembling an unpaid board of advisers who would meet next week with Robertson to help him manage his windfall, including the payment of income taxes. The board will have a lawyer, financial planner and other advisers, but "I'm not going to be on it — I'm not even going to be at that meeting," said Pollock, a vice president/wealth management at the Troy offices of UBS. He said his involvement as a friend might appear to be a conflict of interest were he to help manage Robertson's sudden wealth.

$5000 a year for car insurance? That's a new car every 4 years.

Detroit needs to blow up and start over.

But nice story.

He received $300,000 in donations, plus the car. That'll buy half of Detroit.

Yeah, I pay $140 per month for full coverage on 2 vehicles with 2 drivers. My wife has a perfect record, but I have a DUI (14 years ago so I don't think it counts anymore) plus 2 speeding tickets on my record. Agree time to blow up and start over.

I pay $59/month for one car, one driver, no tickets, no accidents.

RE: Michigan man who walks 21 miles to work given new car
Factors that affect car insurance rates:

Driver's Age
The driver’s age plays an important in determining rate of insurance. The basic premise being that drivers under the age of 25 tend to be more reckless and have higher accident rates than older drivers. This fact is deduced based on statistical averages showing the profiles and ages of accident victims. Some states also have higher premiums if the driver is very elderly.
Car issues
The purpose of the car (commuting/delivering/company vehicle etc), the cost of the car (cheap models cost less to insure than state of the art European makes- spare parts are expensive), and the distance that is driven on an average all make part of the rate calculation.
Geographic factors
The place where the applicant lives is another issue. If it is a theft ridden locality, premiums will be higher. The terrain: Hilly, rocky or smooth make a variable. The traffic demographics play its part. Less traffic will mean less likelihood of having an accident but congestion will mean more chances of getting hit and so premium will be higher.
Applicant’s profile
This is by far the most crucial factor in determining insurance rates. The gender (women are considered safer drivers than men), the occupation or the job profile of the applicant (a teacher will have less driving to do than a milk van driver), marital status (a married person pays less than a single one), education levels (higher education levels lead to reduced premiums): all are recorded before calculating the premium rates of auto insurance.
Quality of driving record
A clean record improves possibility of a lower premium. It’s very simple. A record smattered with speeding tickets and fines for drunken driving shows that the driver is likely to have further problems and accordingly the rates will be hiked. A good record on the other hand indicates that the driver is trustworthy and observant of traffic rules and regulations.
Miscellaneous factors
Theft protection devices on the car reduce premiums as so multiple drivers of the car (the risk is then spread out).

Everyone is applauding this story and I too appreciate the fact that this gentleman has a job, but I have to ask if he is retarded?

The dude left at 8am to get to his job that starts at 2pm. Then he leaves work at 10pm and gets home at 4am. All this for $10.55 per hour. The minimum wage in Michigan is $8.15 per hour.

If he had gotten a job at McDonald's and a second job at Burger King, he would have saved himself 2-3 hours per day and made an extra $46 per day or $11.5k per year.

Michigan has the most expensive auto insurance rates in the country. A big driver is the expenses for their No-Fault Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage. PIP Coverage covers your medical expenses when you are injured in a car accident. After a small deductible the coverage is unlimited for life. As you can imagine there is a lot of abuse of this coverage and people find creative ways to use it as health insurance for all of their ailments.

Maybe he liked his job and the people he worked with? Now you say he should take 2 crappy jobs that he would hate?

The story comments on here reminds me of the Bushism where he thinks it is the "American way" to need to work 3 jobs just to live. He is a "great American" because he gets paid a crappy wage forcing him to have to walk 21 miles to/from work everyday.

He is a great American because instead of sitting at home and doing nothing while taking welfare checks, he gets out of bed and goes to work. Waking 20 miles a day to do it. He is everything that Obama and Libs hate. They want people like him to just take welfare and vote Democratic like numb minded robots. I applaud and salute this man. He represents what this country was built on. Determination and hard work. Not being dependent on big government and a check for doing absolutely nothing.

He is a great American because instead of sitting at home and doing nothing while taking welfare checks, he gets out of bed and goes to work. Waking 20 miles a day to dot it. He is everything that Obama and Libs hate. They want people like him to just take welfare and vote Democratic like numb minded robots. I applaud and salute this man. He represents what this country was built on. Determination and hard work, not being dependent on big government and a check for doing absolutely nothing.

On a side note, if I lived in Detroit, I'd be paying $7k for health insurance with a $12k deductible along with a minimum of $5k for car insurance and I have two of them. No wonder Detroit is a shithole. This guy needs to escape.

There's been something of a debate about Detroit's public transit system (or lack thereof) since the story broke. People Mover is a one-way mockery of rail downtown and if I remember correctly the buses from the 'burbs go express (no new passengers) once they enter the city limits. If Gilbert, Ilitch, & co. actually manage to resuscitate Detroit with green blood, public transportation is going to be a big ticket item. Don't think a car town like Detroit will ever see the level of sophistication of a DC, NYC, or LA (or hell, even a Philly) but I expect tangible improvements eventually.

The Woodward M-1 Rail is a step in the right direction, but the bus thing is a social/political issue with the 'burbs.

I think New Jersey has been the most expensive for car insurance a few times as well. I'm paying 80 full coverage on 2014 model

No! You are just enabling him! Now he will become soft and lazy. What do you expect him to do with that extra 5 hours everyday?
