Now.. This one, we can say Walmart was in the wrong
I know a lot of people like going after Walmart for their hiring policies and stuff... and usually I defend them.

But for once, I'm on the anti-Walmart crowd side

Boo to Walmart!

And I don't care about the "what if he had been shot, etc.". What about "doing the right thing"?

Quote:It was all in a day’s work — that is, until Watson said he found himself out of work less than a month later.

“It was strange that they came to this conclusion after 27 days,” he told AL.com. “I thought I was protecting the company.”

Watson had committed “gross misconduct” for failing to comply with Walmart’s security measures — namely just letting the guy go, he said.

Just once, I think certain box chains need to grow some damn balls, especially when the employees do the right thing for your organization.

I'd be happy to see Wal-Mart file for bankruptcy.

Ekk. that'd only leave me with Target, where NOBODY seems to be happy , HOD....

Come to think of it.. I haven't seen too many smiling faces in my local Walmart either lately...

Yea, When I worked at Home Depot as a teen, they told us then that we were supposed to let shoplifters go and not to confront them or anything. We weren't even allowed to verbally confront them.

I even witnessed a guy grab a $150 faucet off the shelf, walk up to the return desk and try to "return" the faucet. The woman working the return desk denied his return due to not having a receipt and the guy just walked out of the store with the faucet. The woman told me that people try it all the time, and they will go from store to store until someone gives them a "return" for it.

I know a guy who works in security for Walmart in El Paso. He told me they sometimes rough up guys pretty bad, especially if they're illegals. And then when the thief is a little bumped and bruised, well, maybe more than a little, and the cops finally show up, nothing happens to the WM guys. He said they rarely get return thieves.

Funny - where I live the Target employees seem to be happier than the Wal Mart ones - and have much more of a clue where something might be and more willing to ask "Are you finding everything you need?" - I NEVER get that in the local Wal Mart.

I'm guessing it might have a lot to do with who is managing the store and such.

I hate what happened to this guy...but...He was a manager. He fully knew the company policy and willfully ignored it.

Don't these "just let them steal stuff" policies boil down to insurance and lawyers?

Economics, mostly. It's not worth the costs associated with preventing the theft, namely the risk of the employee harming themselves, someone else, or even the thief unduly. People have to steal a lot of merchandise to pay for a single employee becoming injured trying to stop them. Not to mention harming another customer.

I was a team leader at a Sam's Club during college. We once went a year without a loss-prevention manager. It's become an extra expense when they not going to actively stop shoplifting. They're scared of getting sued or accused of discrimination.

I actually like the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market. WAY more clean. Way quieter. Way less crowded. Way better selection of stuff you want (not virgin processed kale grown off fertilizer only crapped out of strict vegan human liberal hippies) than most grocery stores. I prefer the Wally World Neighborhood Market for the basics, and Costco for meat cuts, ground beef, and bulk consumables.

No, they're scared of causing any injuries to their employees or other customers. Stop injecting this narrative of 'PC gone awry' when it's simple math. It's as simple as the cost of theft prevention is more than the cost of stolen items.

My only complaint about Walmart is I can never find someone who speaks English. If you don't need to ask any questions, Walmart is fine.

You get what you pay for, compare that to Costco where they pay good wages and provide ample benefits to their employees.

I kinda like Target but can't stand Walmart. I don't usually end up asking for help but the few times I did it was easier to find someone at Target. And I can get through the checkout aisles faster.
