Position Battles: Quarterback
Spring practice really isn't that far away. I wanted to post some threads on position battles that may occur as the new freshmen come in.
Start with QB.
I think it is pretty clear that Zach Terrell is the front runner for the job. While I have no doubt that PJ is going to open up the competition, I think he is going to have to be blown away by Cam Thomas, Chance Stewart, or Jon Wassink.
I give Wassink basically no chance, despite the coaching staff really loving him. I just don't see him coming in, in August, learning and mastering the offense, and winning the job.
The real battle is likely for back up. Stewart came in with a lot of pub, but I've been told he is a long way away from unseating Terrell, which means he is maybe not even better than Thomas at this point. The Broncos definitely need to develop a quality backup, so hopefully one of these guys or Wassink emerges.
Winner: Zach Terrell
Backup: Chance Stewart

I expect Terrell to continue to improve, particularly in his decision-making, and be a First-Team All-MAC quarterback next season. Chance also needs to get some early-season snaps, maybe even Cam. Wassink is a red-shirt.

I think Chance will have to have a great off season of delvoping to surpass Terrell. It not likely that he does, but given a year to learn the offense its not out of the question to see Chance starting next year.

Terrell would have to regress a great deal to lose the job. He's number one. Cam Thomas is number 2.

I wish we had pre-season games against teams -- not practice games, but like games where people go to, on ESPN3, etc. That way we could all see how good the QBs are in play.

Don't forget about Flacco. It could just be talk, but if you listen to P.J.'s Signing Day press conference, he really talks Flacco up and makes it sound as if he could push - and maybe even challenge - Terrell.
I'll believe that when I see it, but he really had some high praise for Flacco.

I guess Flacco is a freak of an athlete, could move over to another position if the QB track doesn't work out.

RE: Position Battles: Quarterback
I'm amazed at how many QBs we're going to have next year, and then even more the following year with Little coming in.
Terrell has the job secured right now. It would have to take some outstanding performances to unseat him. I see Stewart as #2 though. He's got the better size and I believe is more suited to the system than anyone else. Wassink should redshirt. He's good, but there's no need for him to be throw in just yet. Flacco I could see being moved to a different position simply due to the depth we have at QB.

I stand by my opinion and will until proven wrong. Chance Stewart might want to put on some weight and learn to play TE. He will NEVER take a snap as QB at WMU, unless Terrell gets hurt and is out for significant time this season.
Terrell is a 2 year starter who played VERY well last season and did exactly what was asked of him and needed. I don't see him losing his job. So that's the next 2 seasons. And with Wassink coming in, from I have seen, he's going to end up being better all around that Stewart. I saw Stewart's little brother last year. Not as big, but without question has a better arm. Throws an absolute clothesline across the field.
I just don't think Chance is ever going to get his shot.

As OSU found you don't know what you have until they see the field.
