Nailed it
I LL bet you that CU plays in CSU's new stadium (if they build it) at least once. I'd also bet that most of those commenting in this thread have never been to Ft Collins or Boulder. Boulder is a dirty disgusting town, Ft Collins is a lot nicer. Those that have been to Northern Colorado are free to tell me why they disagree.
Look... I grew up in Denver. I went to school in Denver (both Metro State and UC-D). I have family still in the Denver area. I have been to both towns and campuses. (Personally, I agree with you, I like Fort Collins better than Boulder...) The two cities are very different, though I wouldn't term Boulder "dirty and disgusting." (It is very granola..."crunchy" if you want... We used to call it the "PRB"--the Peoples' Republic of Boulder. Fort Collins used to be nicknamed "Fort Fun" because it was just a much more relaxed place.)
In all my time growing up, CU-CSU was never a huge rivalry. CSU's rivals were Wyoming (#1), Air Force (#2), and Utah (#3). New Mexico sometimes. CU's rivals were, in the old Big 8-Mizzou, Kansas, and later, Nebraska (though Nebraska NEVER considered CU a "rival."). I don't think CU ever really got a new rivalry going in the B12, though Baylor seemed to get their goat fairly regularly.
You can mourn the loss of this series, but I will say that it ranks well below these other lost in-state rivalries:
#1 Texas-Texas A&M
#2 Utah- BYU
#3 Pitt- Penn State
#4 Kansas- Missouri (I know...it's trans-state, but they overlap so much...)
Just being in proximity does not a rivalry make. There are a number of factors that go into bona fide rivalries. I just don't see it in CU-CSU.
