I pointed out USA's departure from the system as an example of what could happen here. If it happened and I was in charge - I would fight hard to get the Birmingham School of Law (or whatever it is called now) to join UAB... Yeah, I know I am dreaming but go for the jugular.

This. This needs to happen. Whether it happens by absorbing the BSOL or starting one from scratch, UAB needs a pipeline into the statehouse in the worst of ways.

RE: Follow South Alabama's example
All the various power players in Alabama are part of the "fiefdom culture" that dominates the state politically as well as academically. Everyone of them has their own "walled fortress" over which their (logo) flag is flown. It is likely that members of the state legislature, in order to get the funding to get (re)elected, swore allegiance to one or another of these fiefdoms and the special interests they support. That is a part of the problem for teachers who are told that they are "respected" while their professional organization is publicly reviled and constantly attacked. "My fiefdom against your fiefdom" with "no man's land" in between.

There are three law schools presently operating in Jeffco. Cumberland at Samford, Miles College School of Law and the BSOL. If UAB could add a law school, we would be the 4th SOL if we didn't absorb one or more of the others. The state Bar has attempted to shut the BSOL down before.

It is a night school, with about the prestige of ITT Technical School. Not accredited.

RE: Follow South Alabama's example
Again - if we took it on we would bring about the accreditation and prestige. You may scoff at the night school but I know several very wealthy Birmingham lawyers who went there, quite a few judges, and senators who came from there...

BUT THIS IS NOT ABOUT THAT SCHOOL - this is about what could be if we were given the independence. If BSOL was open to becoming part of UAB (a big if) then we would obviously seek ABA recognition.

This is about UAB having the independence to do what is best for UAB.
