Recruiting class
The loi's are filling in this morning for Liberty. At least 2, 3* kids. It appears coach Gill wanted to get faster. Several tweets by coaches point out how fast these guys are. If liberty dues go FBS, that's one of the biggest difference. You've got to have a elite speed.

If in town it would be fun to attend the 6pm Recruiting Report Event is one was in town. Fortunately, GameOn will be broadcasting it on Espn3 and Youtube.

LU website says all the NLI are in. Good to see a couple of local Lynchburg guys made it official. That should help build local interest.

KH, I know you are following the recruiting class closely as you are following some of the recruits on Twitter. Who stands out in this group from your following?

I should have said 3 local guys with Foutz from Roanoke who is listed as a tight end. I see he is from Cave Springs. Wonder if Woodrum had any influence with him choosing LU? At 6'4" 220 lbs, that is a big kid and one can never have to many tight ends.

Offense: Damian King, Denvre Daniels, and Frankie Hickson (4.3 - 40) I think Hickson redshirts and one or both of the WRs fit into the slot picture and return game right away.

Defense: Peters, Davis, Frazier. I think Frazier might RS and eventually be the next Chima. These 2 dbs could play right away if needed with Scott and Hagen being out.

But the class is solid across the board. Its clear speed and power were focus. Little surprise by only one LB though.

Does the team have any more openings or they at their limit?

RE: Recruiting class
I'm pretty happy with the positions recruited. I think to succeed you need a quarterback and trenches so since we have a couple quarterbacks already, I'm glad we are reloading the trenches. I think speed is a little overrated but I'd rather have it than not have it. I hope this class turns out well and just keeps getting better from here.

Does anyone know how other Big South schools did?

RE: Recruiting class
I disagree about speed being overrated. I think it'd often what separates teams. Speed is why the sec won so may national championships. When Urban Meyer got to Ohio St he said the first thing he had to do to compete with sec schools is to upgrade the teams speed, the second thing was get defensive lineman that are big agile and quick. I've read several comments from jmu posters talking about how they were impressed with liberty speed in the playoff game. I think it's vital.

Agree 100%. Also as a Uni. of Miami (my second favorite school after LU), UoM won those championships with fast, athletic schools. They were beating the bigger Oklahoma and Nebraska teams (Turner Gill) with speed. Miami was not as big but their pursuit from their LBs and D line was the difference. Speed can be a tremendous asset in most sports.

RE: Recruiting class
Oregon has more speed than anyone and comes up short in the big game against more physical teams. The SEC gets the best recruits in the nation who are both fast and strong. Fast is nice until you get punched in the face. It's important but not then end all attribute.

Speed must have the bulk also. Speed alone, or bulk alone is not enough. A combo of both is the best. Speed tends to overwhelm bulk as bulk is more likely to wear down and tire.

If we landed 14 of the 16 we targeted and offered, that's pretty darn good. Hopefully this a good class. We'll see in about three years. They look good so far.

RE: Recruiting class
Watched Turner Gill's Youtube interview on the years recruits and the GameOn show with coaches comments. All said if any player deserved and earned to start, even as freshman they could. We may not need to wait 3 years to know the quality of some of the recruits.

Either way, there are benefits. It's great when you get a kid with the kind of talent that can play right away. It's good when your program is solid enough you can afford to redshirt and develop the young ones. I am excited about this class and hope some are good enough to make an immediate impact.

I know it's coach speak, but several of the coaches beamed when speaking of several of the recruits having the opportunity to pay right away if they were ready. Seems the red shirt position may be less an issue if the players are more developed and skillful.
