Oh, I don't know. I just sit here at my desk and watch this rank amateur "look bad" all on his own. He doesn't need our help in the least. Matter-o-fact, it might be the one thing he's good at.

You remember the Crusades and the Inquisition, Mach? Yea, me too. I was young, but I remember. 03-lmfao

Mach, I don't care what side of the isle distortions come from. What bothers me is that our economy is not doing all that well, yet this number gets paraded out as though things are getting substantially better - but they are not.

It's like letting a nasty fart in a closed car - and after 1/2 an hour proclaiming it doesn't smell as bad now as it did 1/2 hour ago. Well, it still smells like poop - the odor just isn't quite as strong, but it still doesn't smell like roses.

Well, that's a colorful and rather unnecessary visual, thanks for that.

I think I'll stick with the "Lipstick on a pig" analogy. 03-lmfao

Wrong and wrong.

The numbers are the numbers. The BLS has a methodology they use. It's not cooked or untruthful and they tell you as much as plain as day.

Quote:Because unemployment insurance records relate only to people who have applied for such benefits, and since it is impractical to count every unemployed person each month, the government conducts a monthly survey called the Current Population Survey (CPS) to measure the extent of unemployment in the country. The CPS has been conducted in the United States every month since 1940, when it began as a Work Projects Administration program. In 1942, the U.S. Census Bureau took over responsibility for the CPS. The survey has been expanded and modified several times since then. In 1994, for instance, the CPS underwent a major redesign in order to computerize the interview process as well as to obtain more comprehensive and relevant information.

There are about 60,000 eligible households in the sample for this survey. This translates into approximately 110,000 individuals each month, a large sample compared to public opinion surveys, which usually cover fewer than 2,000 people. The CPS sample is selected so as to be representative of the entire population of the United States. In order to select the sample, all of the counties and independent cities in the country first are grouped into approximately 2,000 geographic areas (sampling units). The Census Bureau then designs and selects a sample of about 800 of these geographic areas to represent each state and the District of Columbia. The sample is a state-based design and reflects urban and rural areas, different types of industrial and farming areas, and the major geographic divisions of each state.
Labor Force Statistics from the Current Population Survey

The BLS also reports other figures on a monthly basis here.

Bottom line, you can't survey every American every month so you apply a reasonable methodology to arrive at the rate...the same way they've been doing it for decades.

The actual number is over 11 percent. The Gallop CEO came out this AM and verified that the numbers are BS. We need about 10 million new jobs to have any affect on the numbers. This administration has been a failure on jobs.

The numbers aren't BS dude, they are the numbers...they're the numbers arrived at using the methodology that they've basically always used.

There are numerous ways to arrive at the estimates of unemployed folks. Again, the BLS provides many different ones as I linked above.

The commonly accepted rate that hits the media every month is the same commonly accepted one they've used for decades...so it's the main one mentioned every month so you can quickly compare to rates from decades of estimates.

Why do you cons insists on splitting hairs over this? One reason, to me...it's because the guy in the White House has brought the number down and that just pisses you guys off. Nothing else makes any sense whatsoever...and it's shameful.

But he has not brought the unemployment number down. NOTHING he has done has accomplished anything in that regard. That is what is shameful.

Gallup CEO's explains of the unemployment number issue.

I guess we can cross Gallup off the list of unbiased pollsters.

Nah...that's just one guy's opinion. He knows the numbers are the numbers and I'm fine with that. He just wants other ignorant souls...I think I know a few...to realize there are other calculations to look at.

I can't think of a single person that I would trust more with numbers than the CEO of Gallop.

Most of the Boomers I know who "retired" were forced out. They want to work, but no one will hire them because they figure it's not worth training someone that age. My Dad started volunteering all the time instead. Many of his friends who didn't save their money as well as he did are still spending 20-30 hours a week looking for gainful employment.

You are correct that they've been calculating the numbers the same way for decades. Therefore the huge growth in the unemployed-and-not-looking category can not be explained by 6 years (or 10, or 20) of an aging population:

Mach, that is just a blatant lie that has been refuted countless times on here already. Labor force participation rates for people 65+ have actually INCREASED (and are projected to continue increasing by the BLS).

Talk about shameless.

Funny how it's "Where's the link?" when someone on the right makes a claim, but it's all high fives and giggles when someone on the left makes one without backing it up.

So you need a link to inform you that baby boomers are retiring? LMFAO
