We did not have better talent on the court. Clearly they are better than us.

Based on recruiting rankings which everyone gets caught up in we are better.

Compare high school rankings side by side for each team

Based on that shouldn't we be better? Or is it coaching?

There is a difference between raw talent and skilled players.

A guy can have all the raw talent in the world and not be a skilled player. Based on rankings, Memphis has signed a lot of ranked talent since Pastner was hired.

Our roster top to bottom was probably ranked higher than VCU, but they ran us off the court a few years back.

While UCF might enjoy some advantages/strengths today (very good hoop conf, nice arena, ok basketball practice facility, warm location), its still practically a brand new program (especially $$ wise) compared to historic programs like Memphis.

As you know, Memphis hoops has been around for almost 100 years...while UCF didn't move up to Div I Hoops till around 1984-1985...but without any budget or facilities to support it (UCF played in a 1,800 seat gym in the Education Building).

UCF mostly played in tiny conf without any tv exposure/$$ like American South Conf and Atlantic Sun...till they finally joined CUSA in 2005-2006...and wasnt till 2007-2008 that UCF had a legit arena to play in...but their basketball budget was still approx 1/5 of that of a program like Memphis.

One season in the ASUN, even after UCF moved into a new 4,600 barn in 1993, UCF drew less "announced fans" for an ENTIRE SEASON, than what Memphis drew for some single games (announced total yearly attendance was 15,900).

And in a worst case scenario...UCF moved up to the AAC at the same time their program was riddled with NCAA sanctions....which finally end after this year so UCF can start rebuilding next year (UCF had just 7 scholarship players for majority of last weekend's game)...with, on paper, the best influx of new talent the program has ever seen...but UCF needs about a decade of recruiting classes like that to hope to begin to make a major splash nationally.

Memphis has had a major hoop program for half a century with usually strong local support...hopefully UCF can enjoy a few seasons like that soon, let alone dream of a half a century of success/support.

I didn't read most of this.

No worries...as the above response was directed to the person who asked.

Based on opinions.

A good coach can win without the best players. See New England Patriots.

Step 1 is getting highly ranked players. Up until this year, JP has been able to do that. Step 2 is developing said players. JP has not shown the ability to consistently do that. Herein lies the problem.

Disagree....I always believe Step 1 is DEVELOPING PLAYERS, regardless if they are 2 star or 5 star players...you need to DEVELOP said player into YOUR SYSTEM to help win games.

Uncontrolled/undeveloped 5 star player is worthless.

I agree with that completely. I just don't think that is JP's approach.

So how does the Giant European players fit into the comparison of high school players? They do make a slight difference don't they?

Yep. And all DI colleges can recruit them.

So when you see something on another roster that is not on Memphis' roster and it is better, then you have to look at the current staff and question the validity or either their evaluation of talent before signing or their development of talent after signing.

However, I would think after the Canada trip and the Gonzaga game that the staff would at least have an eye out for guys outside the normal recruiting channels.

That's not what coach Pastner says. Step 1 is making shots.
