RE: Charles Haley
Thanks for posting the link. I think Charles did a great job up there. It's impressive to see how far he's come and the quality man he has become.

RE: Charles Haley
Yeah it was a little sickening listening to him talk good about Jerry Jones and the Cowboys. Still though, my love for JMU definitely trumps my hate for Dallas even if both are intense as hell.

Former 49ers owner Eddie DeBartolo Jr. doesn’t measure Haley’s career in sacks or Super Bowls. “I think his great legacy, besides being a Hall of Fame and great, great football player, is what he’s going to do with the rest of his life in helping kids,” said DeBartolo, who will introduce Haley in the hall ceremony. “That legacy probably is more important than the legacy that he aspired to in football.” Haley volunteers with an organization of pro athletes who try to help disadvantaged kids. And he has his own niche in wanting to help young people with mental illness. “It’s sobering when you get to see other people like you, but yet you see their struggles because they refuse to get a handle on top of it,” Haley said. “There’s no excuses. My parents taught me right from wrong. The mental illness part is just, I was always in a reactionary mode.” Now that he’s not, he figures there’s only so much he can do to repair relationships. “I just let people watch the way I am now and try to be a friend,” Haley said. “ How many times can you tell somebody you’re sorry? The thing that people want to know is that you have changed. And that’s what’s important more to me is that I have changed.”
Awesome. Thanks for sharing.

I would not say I am torn over him making it in, I just find it hard to be to rah rah about it. While he is fundamentally a Duke, I love him for it. While he is fundamentally a Cowboy, I detest him for it. While I don't think he was the next guy that should have gone in the hall at his position(not looking to start another giant debate), I am ambivalent about him being selected. It's like midget porn, uncomfortable to watch, but still interesting.

Putting the midget porn comment aside...

At the Hall of Fame gift shop this weekend, Haley had shirts with both the 49ers and that team from North Texas. I got the 49ers shirt, not because I'm a fan but I could not bring myself to buy the other. He was the only inductee with two separate teams' shirts. I plan to wear it proudly as a fan of all things Dukes related this season. Congrats to Charles, Challace and JMU!

I'm trying to relate: That would be like me having a HS buddy accept a football scholarship to play at Tech and my never speaking to him again.

Yep. Longtime, diehard Cowboys fan here and little would make me happier than to see Gary Clark get in the Hall. I detest the Washington football franchise and got mad at every pass he ever caught against my team but his getting that bust and plaque with JMU on it trumps all that.

RE: Charles Haley
Look, I hate the Cowboys as much as anyone here, and I am stuck living in Cowboy hell. But that has absolutely no bearing as to whether or not I root for Charles. Just like the fact that Gary Clark ended up playing for the Redskins didn't stop me from feeling proud of his accomplishments even though I don't like the Skins.

I was at JMU when Charles was there. He wasn't exactly a model citizen nor a very nice guy. But, look how far he has come and how he has grown and overcome his issues. I'm not saying I would wear a Cowboy jersey with his name on it, but I can't understand any JMU alum not feeling 100% proud of Haley's enshrinement.

I think it was mentioned during the ceremony that there are only (with the 8 joining the Hall this year) 290 men who have been so honored.

Think about that for a second...in the highest Hall of Honor for all the players everywhere who have ever played the game, Charles Haley, from "little" (grrrrre) James Madison is one of the 290 best players who have ever played the game.

It's an incredible honor for Charles and JMU. There should be zero reservation about cheering for Charles.

LOL. You guys crack me up. "You mean to tell me the root of your ill thoughts is due to the team he played for versus where your football allegiance rest?" As I thought I explained, my "football allegiance" belongs to both, and if it comes down to it, I have been a Skins fan/Cowgirls(and Eagles) hater for a LOT longer than a JMU fan/alum.

All that being said, I think some of you guys are twisting this into something it is not. I have never said I hated Haley, I simply said it leaves me a bit torn. His pro career is in fact what this is all about. This is not a College hall of fame, but a pro one. Meaning, the Pro status/contributions should carry the most precedence. For a CHOF there would be no queasiness at all. Given all of that, I still mentioned on another post that I thought he did a pretty good job on the speech, JMU got a lot of good pub from it, and that I even bought my wife a Haley jersey a few years back. I don't hate the guy by any means, just a little heartburn over it. A lot of people have talked about the guy being a jerk in the past, well, I ran across the guy in Gold's gym about 2 years after he retired. He corrected my poor lifting form on an exercise I was doing and was nothing but helpful. Totally cool dude. Then he went back to running at damn near a full sprint for about 20 minutes on a stairmaster. I have never seen ANYONE work out like that on a friggin stairmaster. So, my interactions with him have been pretty positive too. Just that damn star irks me.

That's cool it just came over a bit tougher than that.
