I found Simon Sebag Montefiore's books on Stalin interesting - Young Stalin and Court of the Red Tsar. If you're going in chronological order it might fit reasonably well in your list.

Thanks a lot! It's not easy to find books about alexander I and II, at least not popular, we'll reviewed ones. I'm definitely going to check this one out. Been wanting to read Something about the so called tsar Liberator for a while now.

Just grabbed it from the library. Will report back when I'm finished

Sweet, thanks. Not quite ready to go forward, would rather fill out as much as possible of the past and then I'll start getting into post Lenin stuff

1776, by David McCollough. The Revolution was not a fait accompli

A Storm in Flanders by Winston Groom (yes, THAT Winston Groom), World War I

The Politics of Rage, by Dan T. Carter, about George Wallace

Just finished A Storm in Flanders. Very interesting. Really enjoyed it.

I had no idea about McKinley. Damn.

He was. He was also supposed to go to Ford Theatre that night but was feeling tired.

Some years after McKinley a president invited him to an event and he declined, saying the last two times had not turned out well.

"London Labour and the London Poor" by Henry Mayhew

Describes the life of the poor in London, and led to many social changes in Great Britain in the 1800s. "Gangs of New York" reads like a fairy tale by comparison.

The Legacy of he Civil War by Robert Penn Warren.

Nobody is equipped to discuss the civil war until they have read that book.
