Full Cost of Attendance for All Student-Athletes
A little surprised this isn't being talked about.
http://www.niuhuskies.com/genrel/012815aac.html
Quote:That said, I want to let you and all current and prospective student-athletes know that NIU intends to award scholarships that include COA for all sports beginning in 2015-16. Members of the NIU Athletics administrative team began working on this issue a year ago and we are still working through the operational details. At this time, we are calculating that covering the COA will result in a commitment of a minimum of $800,000 dollars annually in scholarship costs. It will be on us, as an athletic department, to generate those additional financial resources by maximizing all of our revenue streams. It is imperative that we focus on areas such as improved premium seating options, increasing sponsorship opportunities and leveraging existing partnerships to generate our estimated additional revenue needs.

RE: Full Cost of Attendance for All Student-Athletes
We are witnessing a sea-change in college athletics.
In the arms race of college athletics, how many more kids will eschew NIU to go to an Iowa State because ISU gives them a couple more COA bucks a year? NIU fights so many battles (directional school, suitcase school, dangerous school, non-traditional college looking campus, underperforming sports teams, DeKalb, cold, windy etc) this is just another hurdle to get, well, a hurdler to come to NIU.
I am, unfortunately, currently cautiously pessimistic about the COA payments. However I am very willing to be convinced otherwise in the future if the data shows otherwise.

I would like to know what FBS schools have not announced that they will be offering this OR if there are any FBS schools that have said they wont.

I am guessing, NIU won't be throwing away 450k on getting rid of Monty and Kathi Bennett and the cost of two new coaches. Actually, I am sure that all our coaches will see the end of their contracts. As, I said before let's hope the coaches can turn things around, it's in the best interest of the athletic dept!

So how does COA work for the sports where they deal in partial scholarships?

Folks, the price of tickets just went up. You noticed that SF did not mention students fees.
Thanks 4phasedelta for the great football pic.

Probably a proportional percentage of the COA based on the amount of the partial scholarship.

Wasn't the new money from the football playoff supposed to be around 1mil per team for us G5s and generally agreed upon that it would be more than enough to cover the basic COA?

Here's a good write-up - http://www.herdzone.com/sports/m-footbl/...15aaa.html
Each G5 conference gets $12 million. Plus there's a performance bonus added on depending on conference bowl record (Something I did not know)
So if that's split up evenly (which it may not be), it's just over $1mil per MAC school
Another good article that shows all the conferences - http://businessofcollegesports.com/2014/...e-payouts/

After this year since UMASS is still in the conference and we likely have to divide it 13 ways.

Increased paid attendance at basketball and football is vital. A 1k increase in attendance would put over $100k in the coffers. What will happen is the same big donors will be asked to kick in more.

RE: Full Cost of Attendance for All Student-Athletes
You don't necessarily need to increase prices if you just get more people out to the games. Increasing attendance is even more critical now.
These changes aren't as much about P5 vs G5 vs everyone else as it is about drawing a line between schools with athletic departments that are self sustaining and those that are not. P5 schools will continue to hoard the resources but there is a place for most G5 programs to co-exist at the highest level if the right model is in place.
In the MAC's case, I think it is a mixed bag across the membership. Collectively, all schools say they are on board but if you peel it back its very clear all things are not equal across the league. Banking on the increased TV and playoff money to cover the increased cost of business is not really gaining anything over the long term as its zero sum gain. Where G5 schools like NIU will make hay in the new world is through building self sustaining athletic departments. Collect your playoff and TV money and then augment with additional revenue streams (tickets, donations, merchandise, etc.). This is where the D1 world is going. Schools that can develop and successfully implement that business model will remain in the game, those that do not will fall father back. NIU, Miami, and Buffalo have come right out and said they will support whatever they need to. Kent and Akron are doing studies. It's a mixed bad across the league.

NIU Athletics can not become self sustaining. The only reason we have sports is the students fees!

Shifting the culture. Frazier's email doesn't say anything about student fees to cover the additional costs. Also the master facilities plan is supposed to be all privately funded. The athletic department seems to be trying to reposition itself and that is the right move. With the declining enrollment at the school and continued downward pressure on state funding, it's even more critical to generate revenue outside of fees and become self sustaining.

What happens if NIU does a study and decides that $500 student fees should be cut back or eliminated. Over 10 million dollars is generated by a required student fee to maintain sports at NIU.
What do the students receive for $500? Free tickets.

It doesn't matter what his email says without student fees there is no facilities plan, or Yordon, or Chessick. It is going to be very hard for the NIU's to stay with the power conference teams.
