Former Louisville recruit commits to Wake Forest
http://espn.go.com/college-sports/recrui...-cardinals
Quote:High school running back Matt Colburn has landed at Wake Forest, a week after Louisville asked him to delay his enrollment, drawing national headlines.
Colburn made the announcement at his South Carolina high school Wednesday, and Wake Forest coach Dave Clawson tweeted out the news after the school received his letter of intent.
10/30/15 should be fun :)

RE: Former Louisville recruit commits to Wake Forest
Much as I want Oct. 30th to be a "feel good" story for Mr. Colburn, I suspect that when he meets Louisville's Devonte Fields it may not work out so well for him and the Deacons... hope I'm wrong (and the kid rushes for 200+ yards that night!)
Best wishes to both teams (neither of whom play the Hokies this Fall... at least not until the ACC CG).

I wish Colburn well, when he isn't playing the Cards.

There are no guarantees he would see the field anyway. The Deacs signed three RBs in this class, all of whom are rated about equal in the scouting services. Chances are that at least one of them will be redshirted, and maybe two.

Which is kind of ironic, since that's basically what he would have done if he had accepted Louisville's offer.

Yeah, but then we wouldn't have had the Week Long Venom slinging of Coach Petrino that the Sports Media Loved.
Everything always works out the way it's suppose to.

But if he does redshirt, he gets a full year of paid education under his belt at Wake, which would not be the case at Louisville where he'd have to forego a semester of school or pay for it himself.

I don't think he would have the option of paying for it himself. If he has signed an LOI and enrolls for the fall semester, even paying out of pocket, I believe he would still count against the scholarship limit for 2015 (which was Louisville's issue in the first place). He could only be counted as a 2016 recruit if he waited until the spring semester to enroll. I'm not sure what happens if he takes transferable credits at a community college during the fall semester to get a head start on meeting academic eligibility requirements.

Except a grayshirt year doesn't allow you to practice with the team in order to get better as a player or be a part of the strength program and it typically a wasted year of development.
But yeah, other than that it's the exact same thing.

I've wondered what grayshirts typically do while they are waiting to enroll. I guess I usually picture them living at home and lifting weights on their own. Maybe taking a chemical or two to speed up the muscle building process.
Are schools allowed to provide these players with a suggested strength regimen, as long as they don't supervise them directly? And can they give them a playbook to study even though they can't actually practice? Though I could see how the latter would be very risky, since technically the kid could enroll somewhere else.

There are some lucky players that get to concentrate on getting ready for the NFL and not have to worry about school at the same time.

The thing is Kids love the excitement of going off to College at the same time other friends from H.S. are going. the Family gets excited too. It's a Milestone thing and if it's moved back 6 months or so then the excitement fades and it becomes like just fading into the background . You also fear that Others have a jump on You for playing positions or No one will notice what you can contribute. It's a personal choice for the student and I can respect that.

This guy gets it.
Also the longer a kid is away from school, the harder it is to go back & buckle down to schoolwork.
