I agree with this.
As much as I hate to admit it, the G5 has become a facilities arms race to appeal for P5 membership. The old Amon Carter would have never sufficed in the B12, and although UAB is just focusing on CUSA, Legion Field just isn't a long-term viable option for fbs.
That said, I wonder how much aging facilities will be used against both Rice and UAB in recruiting. UH has a brand new stadium. I'm sure it's hard for a new EZF to compete with that.
IMO, if you must keep the old, then an overhaul like TCU's is what you really need, even to compete with UNT, UTSA, and UTEPs stadia (who I'd rank 1,2, and 3, among the CUSA Texas schools).
Go away, Bo!

My bad. It's just that the other schools have bowl-worthy venues. I didn't mean anything. I'm hopeful that the EZF really impresses..

I've seen games in both HRS and the new Amon Carter. Even with it's age, HRS still provides a better view of the game itself.

If you want fancy over-priced bells and whistles, go see an NFL game.

And there have been plenty of bowls played in HRS including one that was Super.

Good grief if we did what UH did can you imagine how much each student would have to pay per sememster?03-lmfao

at 40,000 capacity, TDECU isn't really bowl worthy... and while yes it can be expanded, ask SMU about how those projected costs go.

The Alamodome is a fine place, but so too were the Astrodome, Texas Stadium and Superdome for UH, SMU and Tulane at one point.... that eventually became albatrosses. At that point, those schools will need to find space on their campuses to build a new stadium or be at the whims of the general population. SMU had to drop baseball because of a lack of space.

If you guys don't like HRS, don't come. As far as recruiting, while there are certainly numerous reasons to choose any school over another..... If athletes turn down a top 20 education for a #150 or worse education based not on the athletes facilities used 200+ days a year, but on the restrooms used by fans for 6 days a year... then I'm not sure we should be recruiting them in the first place. That's not academic smack... it's merely addressing the 'recruiting against us' comment. If the training facilities are comparable (and they will be) and it's not a question of schemes or playing time or location or whatever... and they don't value the difference in education more than the width of the aisles for fans... then I really can't help them.

I don't know one kid who chose one school over another because of the 'site lines' for the fans or quality of the restrooms. If you want to argue that we are missing out on 5-10,000 fans per game because of our facilities... that at least has some arguable merit.

As someone who was "educated" outside the hedges, this seems a very compelling argument. This is a big part of why I support Rice Athletics.

Sounds good to me. My question is will it all be done for less than $150?

There's nothing wrong with Rice Stadium. It'll be renovated and look like a brand new, but historic stadium.

I'm astonished that Rice has chosen to build an EZ facility is such an OLD venue. To UH's credit, they tore down Robertson and built a sleek modern on campus facility, that really showcases their program. You better believe that helped them land in the Big East and procure Tom Herman as well.

ODU is doing the same thing. We are NOT EXPANDING Foreman, and we WILL be building NEW. That's what we need to compete with the other fbs level programs. To do anything else would be tantamount to resigning ourselves to bottomfeeders.

And, IMO, the Rice admin has resigned the University to being in the pecking order BEHIND the U of H by pouring more money into Rice Stadium instead of leaping in front of U of H and SMU with a contemporary stadium (i.e. Modern gameday experience). Even TULANE got a brand spankin new stadium and moved up.

Rice will stay a fixture in CUSA as long as the U of H stays in the AAC because of this gross disparity in facilities. Any other thinking is Pie In The Sky, my friends.

UNT even has a new stadium. And, for that reason, I am down with the Screaming Eagles or whatever they are. Lol

Just watch when we get ours at ODU. I know the ODU AD is competing for any future AAC spot if one opens up, and this jewel of a building will make ODU a front runner.

I don't think anyones thinkin Big 12. On the whole Monarch fans see expansion in a realistic sense.

Me, personally, I am very happy with CUSA. And if you're happy with having an old Robertson-like gameday vibe, then I'm happy you're happy. We will be happy together for a long time.

I'm just sayin, that there are reasons we're CUSA 4Life! "BUY THE SHIRT!!"
