Out of the 2010 game, 4 went undrafted and 3 are still in school. The remaining 17 were drafted.

I was drafted and played 10 years in the NBA.

How many of them were from Memphis? Imagine if Bruce Pearl got your JJs, Adonis' and Dedrics' rather than your Dane Bradshaws.

Pearl signed a lot of 4 & 5 star recruits during his tenure at Tennessee.
5-stars: Tobias Harris, Duke Crews, Ramar Smith, Scotty Hopson
4-stars: Philip Jurick, Renaldo Wooldridge, Cameron Tatum, Kenny Hall, Wayne Chism, Tyler Smith, Trae Golden & Jordan McRae.

I think that Tobias Harris is the only one of all of these that are in the NBA. Crews & Ramar Smith were busts, and Hopson never lived up to their potential, despite the excellent coaching that he obviously got from Pearl.

For the 4-stars: McRae & Chism were college "stars", but the rest of those guys were role players. Tyler Smith was having a good run before he had his legal trouble.

I don't see any reason to think that Pearl would have done any better with the 4 & 5-star Memphis kids than he did with the 4 & 5-star players he got at Tennessee.

Huh?

He went to the tourney every season he coached there - 6 years - and went to two Sweet 16s and one Elite 8.

I used to work with a guy that went to high school with Ford and he swears that Ford sr would doctor up the box scores to make Ford jrs numbers look better. He always said Vincent Rainey was the real star of that team.

Yep.

Imagine Garner, Rainey, Ced, Vaughn and Ren as the starters.

Neither SG in that big class Finch signed panned out - Ford or Johnny Miller.

They got some help during their 2010 elite 8 run when #14 Ohio beat #3 Georgetown.

But....perhaps I misspoke. I'm not arguing about Pearl's success. No doubt he had much more success that Josh. I'm just making the point that Pearl's talent & Josh's talent are a lot closer than everyone thinks. There is a misconception around here that Pearl had all of his success with inferior talent. The talent Pearl brought in was very good, and highly rated.

Had Pearl signed Memphis kids like Joe Jackson & Tarik Black, I expect that his results would have been the same as they were with Tobias Harris & Jordan McRae.

The shin splints didn't help Deuce either. They way Kedren runs reminds me a lot of him. Miller left because Deuce was playing instead of him

Yep - transferred to LaTech and was never heard from again.

I went back and looked at the results from that season, the Tigers went on some ridiculous losing streak. Hell, I still remember sitting up late on a weekday watching Memphis get rolled on ESPN by Long Beach State.

By his own admission, Josh Steinthal is madly in love. The object of his affection is a round, leather ball around which he finds his life revolving.

It isn't only that the 6-foot-4 grad of Sumner High is a junior starter at Oregon State. When the practices end and Steinthal heads back to his digs, he's still looking for a game.

"Honestly, that's basically all I do," he says. "I'm the first guy in at practice and the last guy out.

"Then I go home and it's `Oh, Duke and North Carolina are playing on ESPN. Got to watch that. Georgia Tech and Maryland are on ESPN2. Can't miss that. Then USC and UCLA are on Fox. Got to see that.' "

At some point, Steinthal sandwiches in schoolwork and enough polish for his own game to average nine points a game for the 8-3 Beavers. A pure shooter, he was OSU's second-leading scorer last season at 11.9.

He came to the Beavers in improbable fashion. He scored 32.1 points a game as a senior at Sumner, but recruiters questioned him because the team struggled. Fortunately, he caught some eyes in summer camps, including those of Larry Finch, then coach at Memphis.

"They came out and watched me play," Steinthal said. "They had just got done being ranked fourth in the country.

"Schools in the Northwest thought I was maybe just a great player on a bad team. A lot of players get overlooked. I fell through the cracks."

He averaged 3.1 points at Memphis in 26 games before turmoil hit the school. Finch, the longtime coach, was forced out and replaced by Tic Price, and Steinthal says, "We didn't really see eye-to-eye."

Steinthal retraced steps and got in touch with some schools that had originally shown interest, among them Oregon State. He has outlasted Memphis' Price, who lost his job just before this season began after an affair with a student.

Aside from the coaching change, Steinthal values his time spent in the South.

"It was an absolutely complete culture shock," he said. "But it was a great experience for me, being in that racially mixed a city. The players treated me well and the hospitality down South was great. And I got to play at places like Cincinnati and Louisville."

Steinthal made the Pac-10's all-newcomer team last year on an OSU club that overachieved to reach seven Pac-10 victories. Now the talent level is rising, and the Beavers are hopeful of making the postseason in two months.

Steinthal has warmed up after a 5-for-21 start to the season. As long as he's near a basketball - in person or on television - he's content.

"I couldn't have written a better script," he said. "This is the best time of my life.

I know right! Some dude in another thread even tried to say Austin isn't the best NBA prospect on the team. Some of these fans must be in outer space.
