RE: Google Announces Fiber for Charlotte, Raleigh, Nashville, Atlanta
WSJ also had an article about Google having a cell phone service in the works. Basically, you subscribe to Google, and the phone picks the best option of WiFi, T-Mobile, or Sprint services. In the process, it uploads your credit card usage and where you were when you used it, along with when, where and how much there are changes in your bodily fluids to their servers.

I think this is a variant of MVNO service. FreedomPop and Virgin Mobile are other examples of MVNO providers (basically virtual cell phone providers, because they piggyback on the networks of the real providers).

It's not so much the speed of Fiber as it is that it will be uncapped usage and speeds will not be throttled--all threats from Comcast, AT&T, TWC, etc.

Just with Google coming to town, the major telecoms in these areas are going to have to remove caps and speed throttling or lose a large chunk of their customers.

How much are you paying for that? The 13 mbit up seems VERY unusually high for 30 down, especially from Comcrap. I suspect you're connecting over WiFi and saturating your old wireless G / non-MIMO N connection.

Google Fiber: 5mbit down free. 1000 mbit down and something stupid huge like 100 mbit+ up and cable and cable sports tiers ... under $100/mo for the whole thing. No throttling. No caps. No default opt-in open wireless network others can connect to.

Fiber + TV is $120/mo.

I will be happy when WOW!, that's their real name, goes broke. They stick most of Montgomery with 15mbps for $70 per month.

I'm glad I moved out of their footprint.

Ah -- Indeed correct. I must have been thinking Google Fiber + Sling TV (the new Dish IPTV offering).

You should try a speedtest hard wired to the router. I suspect you have much faster than 30 megabit down, but you're saturating the wifi. 13 up is quadruple what I'd expect to see from most cable operators for 30 down.

Remember the Dodge Viper?

Before I get to that, let me tell you that there isn't a product too great, a company so wonderful, that the government can't ruin. When the majority of people start getting speeds over a 100 megs through google or who ever, the government is going to come and regulate it to death and make it more expensive.

Now back to the Viper. That car was great, people loved it, thousands of enthusiasts go to yearly conventions, the car still get huge bucks on the used car market but....but it's no longer being manufactured because government regulations would have forced too many design changes to make it cost effective.

I couldn't say anything based on confidentiality but I've known about this for about 8 months now. The company I used to work for bid on the Charlotte and Raleigh construction mgt package. This is going to be a really good deal for NC. Should be a good back up later on for me for work too.

That's an odd down/up combo.

You know there is a Viper on the market right now, and it still uses the 8.0L+ V10. In case you still want one.

After paying a TW guy under the table and off the clock....I finally got all my lines replaced and upgraded. It was like getting a new computer and TV. Most of my problems were from schitty cable lines and numerous splitters. I don't know what speed my schit is now..but..it works as well as I could ever need. My guy told me that a large part of most peoples trouble is old line and poor previous installations.

That's true. Remember back in the day when Uncle Louie hooked up that 5th TV for you? He killed your internet speeds and probably the speeds of your neighbors.

I had all my schit replaced form the pole to the box. It went from night to day in speed and reliability. I used to get pixelation every time it rained. Found out that one of the underground cables at one time had been cut and repaired. That repair was not waterproof and caused much the problem. My guy said that if you live in a house older than 10 years it is likely you have a line problem to some degree.

^ that was hard wired, with my phone/tablet disconnected from the network.
