I've got 15/5, which does ok for most things. I bought an ASUS 802.11AC router because verizon's old routers just periodically drop all wireless functionality. The router can probably go faster than Verizon, but it should work for future capacity if I decide I need to upgrade.

Why is Google mostly concentrating on college towns (and southern college towns at that)?

Huh? Raleigh, Charlotte, Atlanta and Nashville are bigger growth areas. The South is growing faster in general.

The only place so far that I'd consider a college town is provo. I know people like to think of Austin as a college town but it's 800k people. That's a lot more than just a college town.

Raleigh has NC state but it is also a tech and pharmaceutical hub. It's a city that just happens to have a large college.

I've got one of those modem/router combo boxes

You should try a speedtest hard wired to the router. I suspect you have much faster than 30 megabit down, but you're saturating the wifi. 13 up is quadruple what I'd expect to see from most cable operators for 30 down.

^ that was hard wired, with my phone/tablet disconnected from the network.

Yea, you're saturating your wifi. You should wire up.

Yeah, I bet living in a mid-rise there are a lot of wireless devices around here...I leave my computer hard wired, but not much choice with my phone/tablet/etc.
