A tale of two defenses.
To varying degrees ODU and UVA have both been mentioned this year in terms of nationally good defenses (UVA obviously having better results).
Removing the prospect of individual players (ODU doesn't have a person like Justin Anderson, for instance) you're left with two systems. That leads me to a few questions.
Is the system Bennett operates superior to Jones's? If UVA's players played under Jones's system would they be 19-0? Can ODU take lessons from Bennett's defense strategies and apply them to the team -this- year and help turn the team around from losing 3 of 5?
Or....most importantly....
Does the offense have to get better for ODU to start winning out?

Remember it took time for Tony to get to this level. Just two years ago he was beaten by a 5-25 ODU team. Rome wasn't built in a day.

They were Elite 8 good last year.

I think we could take cues from UVA offensively, but defensively, I think JJ's system is fine. Personally, I would like to see zone be an option occasionally, but can live with being committed to solid man to man. Additionally, I hate seeing guards walk the ball up the court. It servers no purpose. Get the ball into the front court and give yourself time to make an extra pass or two if necessary.

U va plays the pack line defense, we typically play man to man. The defense you play affects the type of players you recruit.

Pack line is man to man, and is basically exactly what we play.
"The "pack line"
The pack line man-to-man defense is also called a "sagging" man-to-man defense. The idea is to clog the inside, protect the paint, and prevent dribble-penetration. Instead of defenders (whose man is one pass away) playing on the line in denial, they will sag back inside the imaginary "pack line". The pack line is an imaginary line two feet inside the 3-point arc (see diagram A)."

We were never 5-25 bad though. We just simply weren't.
We had an alcoholic coach in the middle of a full on mental breakdown.
It's amazing we managed to win 5 games.
But our talent level, while not up to odu standards by any means, was never as bad as that record indicated.

Coaches' bromide: You are -- or were -- what your record says you are. It's the only rational evaluative tool. All else unsubstantiated conjecture.

It's still almost a glorified zone defense. They really need length to be successful and while length certainly would help our defense, we also need guys with quick feet.
Not saying the defenses are completely opposites of each other, but we really recruit guys to play the primary defense that Jones believe in.
For example, Ohio State is having all types of issues this season. In an effort to get more offensive power, they lost some defensive ability and now have to play a zone defense.
"The zone is more suited for our team in terms of who we’re able to put on the floor and what they’re able to contribute,” said Matta, who has 10 players, including four freshmen, averaging at least 12 minutes. “We play a lot of combinations that, if we were playing man-to-man, I don’t think we could play in terms of guarding other people.”

RE: A tale of two defenses.
The reasons I think Zone would be effective for us in some games are:
1. We have a hard time stopping straight line drives in certain games, and the Zone would ensure someone is in the middle to cut the drive off.
2. Our bigs have shown difficulty, especially lately, in defending jumpshots from other bigs. Probably partly because they feel like they need to stay home to cut off drivers. The zone negates that issue as well. Again, I think 90%+ man is fine for this team, but occasionally a zone would be useful. Hell, even K has had to go to a zone at Duke to solve the same exact problems we are having with certain teams.

I think we need to play Douglas more as he gives us more length and more rebounding ability. Maybe zone would help (hurt our rebounding?), but we need to get back to the defensive level of earlier in the season.

We can agree on needing to be better on the defensive end right now.

It would also help to have a healthy Richard Ross and not have Arledge pick up 2 fouls within the first minute of every game.

Arledge leaving with 2 fouls probably helps the defense when Taylor comes in :)

If we played Kentucky 35 times this year out record would probably be 1-34......if we were lucky in one game.
Circumstances and situations do in fact matter.
