IMO it's the first step in the next phase of the 100+ year old conference realignment cycle.

1) Invite a bunch of schools
2) Realize you have too many schools
3) Split into 2 regional conferences
4) GOTO 1

Schedule a conference mate, it counts as conference game. It's just that easy. That should be the rule. I don't think this will result in a lot of these types of games, but it could be the answer to a lot of unhappy fanbases that have lost rival games due to conference expansion.

What this does is show the stupidity of the Atlantic and Coastal divisions of the ACC.

They currently have NC State and Wake on one side, and Duke and UNC on the other. These 4 schools are practically in the same zip code, they should play each other, they just should. And it should all count towards conference standings, that is why you are in a conference, to make these games count towards something.

We can only hope something weird happens where wake or unc wins the conference despite having one more loss than another school because the wake/ unc game didn't count.

It would get really crazy if other teams in the conference did the same.

Got to put this into context, this is coming from the same conference that brought us the same idea of the partial football member. The ACC is the old Big East, they are the next G5 conference.

Haha, you're joking about the ACC being the next G5 conference, right?

Any conference with schools like Notre Dame, Syracuse, Pitt, UNC, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and Virginia affiliated with it will always be a power conference. As much as I hate to admit that, it's the truth. Just because they do some off things when it comes to scheduling does not mean they are suddenly relegated to the G5.

The door it opens is what if every other conference member did the same? It likely creates a situation where the true champion on the field is not the actual champion because some games don't count. It would be very odd.

I am OK with it as long as it only happens occasionally. It is a way to keep old rivals playing each other without long gaps in their series.

Regardless, if it comes down to it you can bet your biffy the CFP Committee will look at it as a conference matchup vs out of conference.

No it doesn't . This works for them because they are 77 miles apart. If I had a conference mate within 80 miles I would want to play them every year too. The ACC is odd in that they don't have a true geographical division of,their conference. As for the OOC conference not counting it a non issue and they. Know the rule going in. It's like the B12 complaining about not being in the playoff after having the formula explained that incorporates a CCG. This really is the biggest non issue ever and it's not ping to be widely copied.

And the Big East was power conference once too, with Miami and VaTech. And what happened with that??? The Big 10 has proven you can take teams from the ACC, when the Big 12 gets ready to reload, where do you think they are going looking??? It won't be at ULaLa, it will be FSU and someone to get West Virginia off their island. You can say what you want about that escape clause contract they have with their members, lawyers drew up that contract, they know how to undo that contract.

Maybe If ND had joined the B1G I believe that the ACC is vulnerable. But right now they have an extremely strong brand. Only the SEC could raid the, IMHO and I don't think anyone but Clemson or Florida State would leave and they are in SEC states...so...

The ACC shouldnt allow it, you are guaranteed an OOC loss.

It's an annoying announcement since UNC has dodged playing us for so many years. I do like the idea, however, after Georgia Southern took the easy road to a SBC Championship this year while we struggled through the juggernauts. I mean, if you can't have a championship game...

Took the easy road of beating all the teams on our schedule, including one you lost to? Not to mention we didn't get beat by an FCS......

Yes. Of all the roads to the Sun Belt Championship, Georgia Southern had the easiest by far.

Now that I've addressed your derailment I'll try to get the thread back on track: This sort of in/out of conference scheduling would be more appropriate for the SBC than the ACC. They already have a championship (so there are less scores to setle) and have a lot more $ (so geography-based scheduling is less necessary).
