Question for Houston football fans
I was wondering about your stadium. Just a few questions , first I know they drove the pylons to expand to sixty thousand so why not chair back seats ? Where are the press boxes located ? What was total cost and are there any more phases in the works ? Does the stadium get used for any other events ? Are your practice facilities inside the stadium ? Do you have any plans to develope more of a tailgate area kind of like what Louisville did to Papa Johns ?

The stadium was supposed to be finished for 120 million, but my understanding is it went over budget and is at 128 million with some items still not yet completed. There are two more phases of 10K seats each, but no plans to build these additional seats until we fill the stadium consistently or we need extra seating as a condition for a P5 invite.

The stadium has been used for some HS playoff football games. There is a new staff that was hired to book the stadium for other events, so I expect to see concerts and other events there in the future. The tailgate area is still developing, but my understanding is the old pavilions are going to be rebuilt in new locations and there are supposedly some fountains and other exterior amenities that will be added to the area around the stadium in the future.

On a side note, the new light rail line to UH has been completed and test runs are currently underway. It should be fully operational shortly. Next football season, one could fly into Houston, taxi to a nice downtown hotel, eat and party in the downtown area, and ride the train to the stadium. No need to rent a car or fuss with parking. I suspect this will be a nice plus for out of town visitors.

What about chair back seats ?

It was a cost issue. The chair backs require more space, so the stadium needed to be bigger to seat 40K in chairbacks. That said, there are some premium sections with chairbacks. There is a significant amount of "premium" backed bench seating as well. I wish they would have used all backed benches, I doubt that cost is all that high--however, the backs may create a space issue with isle depth that would have required more size to the stadium as well (not sure on that).

There are close to 10k chair backs. Half if those are even padded seat and backs. Practice facility is next door near athletic center. Matching Field Turf to what is in the stadium. The place is first class.
