Tragic news in Ypsilanti: EMUWB player Heady and another student in fatal accident

My condolences to the women's basketball team, and the families of both students. It's such a shame.

RE: Tragic news in Ypsilanti: EMUWB player Heady and another student in fatal accident
Wow. I watched the woman's game yesterday (I taped some of it from ESPN's FullCourt). I remember watching her play. She played well. I remember watching her dribbling the ball down the (length of the) court and I had to double check that it was her.

I'll admit what when Reed was killed someone tipped me to the story and asked if I'd do some checking.

I went to Mlive and saw the description of the victim and it really sounded like it could be an EMU athlete.

Someone tipped me to this Mlive story (without any details) and the first thing went through my mind '21' and '23' and that is college aged... and this sounds like another EMU tragedy. I didn't know that they were EMU students nor did I know they were our athletes.

Don't know what to say... Twenty hours ago I was watching her play in a very exciting women's college basketball game...

In a sense, this hits a bit more than Reed's death. It is much easier to identify and relate to basketball players. Yesterday I was watching her play and her play made an impression on me (even though I commented mostly on Sweeney and Dailey who had big games back home in Toledo).

Well maybe its time for perspective this puts the problems with the men's team Ron English football recruiting all becoming rather meaningless in the light of the death of two young women. Sometimes I think EMU athletics and the campus is cursed with incidents like this. No explanation for why.

My hearts and prayers go out to the parents friends family teammates coaches and community.

I agree with you about putting things into perspective.

I tend to view EMU athletics 'as family'. I don't have that feeling toward say the Lions.

When I see EMU players, coaches, administrators, I do try to relate to them as part of the "EMU family' that we are part of.

I find it easier to be supportive than unnecessarily critical.

And I'm still a believer that it is 'better to light a candle than curse the darkness.'

There is little we can do for EMU athletics other than attend games, contribute money, etc. but that is a little like 'lighting a candle.'

I suppose it ultimately doesn't matter, but my hope is that alcohol wasn't involved.

Thought that too and thank god the guy who was driving in his lane wasn't killed.

Although I haven't read any definitive statements as to cause, the comments at the bottom of this article suggests that the intersection/area has been the source of fatalies in recent years.

It is easy to move out your lane at that turn--especially if you are unfamiliar or distracted in some way.

Sounds like a bad intersection, especially dangerous at night.

I normally do not attend women's games but in honor of the tragic accident that claimed two young ladies, all of us should support the next home game.

RE: Tragic news in Ypsilanti: EMUWB player Heady and another student in fatal accident
Prayers and condolences to the friends, family, teammates, and anyone who is grieving today for losing these two young women. I will never understand the dark cloud that seems to cover Eastern Michigan University. As an alumni it has struck me over the years the number of sad and tragic events that surround EMU. Looking back at the last few years it defies explanation that one University has dealt with so much loss (Julia Nieswender, Demarius Reed, Laura Dickinson). The young lady shot while sleeping at Peninsular place last year, the father of an emu student who died last year while fighting with the daughter's roommates etc... Going back further the serial killer John Norman Collins terrorized Ypsilanti in the late 60s, in 2005 serial rapist James Holland assaulted an raped an EMU student in a campus building. There was the scandal in the 1980s surrounding the college of business being built and one of the contractors being killed (never solved). The president's house scandal, and countless other tragic events. I can't fathom there are many other campuses in this country that have dealt with the number of tragedies that EMU has through the years. Obviously, other Universities have dealt with high profile tragedies in recent years but EMU seems to never get a break from the tragedy. Sorry for the rant, I feel terrible for these young people's loved ones. I'm praying that they find peace in time. Here is to hoping that EMU catches a streak of good luck at some point. God bless, to all my fellow EMU fans and alumni.

This is terrible. My condolensces to the families.
Luckeyone, very thoughtful idea to honor the victims by attending the next women's home game.

Schedule: Men play Tuesday vs. Ohio; Women play @ WMU Wednesday (It would be nice to postpone that game).

Saturday: men's/women's home doubleheader.

Saturday is the day for everyone in the Ypsilanti area to come out and support both the EMUWB team and all of the EMU athletic community. As many athletes, faculty, staff, students, locals, etc. as possible should come out.

We always slapped hands before she went onto the court and on her way off after a game win or lose.
