Was Rutgers the first to benefit from guaranteed mult-year scholarships?
http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index....d_tal.html

So news dropped that Tennessee give this Marques Ford's coach a call and tells him that they are pulling his offer. I've got to think that under the previous way of doing things, Tennessee would have found a place for this, by all accounts, very talented kid. Low and behold 2 weeks before signing day he's no longer headed to Knoxville but instead to Piscataway.

Apart from seeing the B1G land a solid recruit, I have to wonder if this was a direct result of the recent legislation that passed guaranteeing multi-year Schollies. The SEC has been the most flagrant violators of oversigning which partially explains why they have the best recruiting classes every year and absolutely explains why they all have 20+ more recruits sign with their programs over a 4-5 year period that the B1G schools.

If my hunch is right, then this new rule is already a pain in the arse for the SEC and explains why they and the Big 12 didnt support the bill. I still think the SEC will get their guys but in the future it looks like things will start to spread out if they cant over sign anymore.

This isn't the scenario as to why the SEC and B12 didn't support the guarantee on scholarships. Tenn continued to persue several other top DE recruits after getting a verbal from Ford. UT just landed a 5* DE. They decided that there were too many DEs in this class, so they pulled their offer to one. It's scummy, but really no different than a top recruit verballing to a safety school while waiting to see what better offers come along. At least UT gave Ford a quick heads up about it. There have been times where schools wait to see their final tally on LOI day to pull an offer.
The SEC and B12 were against the fuour year scholarship because their member schools are famous for blindsiding kids in the off season and pulling scholarships without cause. Basically a kid with a good GPA and no discipline problems is dumped because the school Hopes to land a better recruit and wants to make room. All schools will suggest that under performers should think about moving on. SEC schools are famous for telling a kid that all is well for next year, then turning around and pulling that kid's scholarship over summer break. I've heard of some cases were the letter bearing the bad news has been dated and mailed on the very same day as the kid's last meeting with his coach.
Getting back to Ford. I think UT realized that there was no way to tell a 4* recruit with a 4.3gpa that he was going to have to layover in a community college and hope for a break. This kid would never go for that. At the end of the day this is a really good get for RU.
