Israeli Mossad Goes Rogue, Warns U.S. on Iran Sanctions.

The Israeli intelligence agency Mossad has broken ranks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, telling U.S. officials and lawmakers that a new Iran sanctions bill in the U.S. Congress would tank the Iran nuclear negotiations.

Already, the Barack Obama administration and some leading Republican senators are using the Israeli internal disagreement to undermine support for the bill, authored by Republican Mark Kirk and Democrat Robert Menendez, which would enact new sanctions if current negotiations falter.

"The Head of Mossad did not say that he opposes additional sanctions on Iran,” said the spy agency Thursday.

"Mossad Head Tamir Pardo met on January 19, 2015, with a delegation of US senators,” Mossad said in a statement. “The meeting was held at the request of the senators and with the prime minister's approval. At the meeting, the Head of Mossad stressed the extraordinary effectiveness of the sanctions that have been placed on Iran for several years in bringing Iran to the negotiating table.”

So the sanctions are working. Which the neocons said wouldn't. We have Israel ( Bibi ) trying to sabotage what is working and we have their own CIA breaking ranks and undermining Bibi.

Sanctions, USA, UN, European, have hurt Iran over the years, but it has not stopped
the nuclear program Mach, so technically, no it has not worked. Which is why some want more sanctions on them. The Mossad has killed maybe 5 Iranian nuclear scientists.

Why would their own CIA say they are working then?

The proper context in which to read this, Netanyahu's visit to Congress, and even some of the rhetoric on the Iranian nuclear program is pretty much limited to Israeli domestic politics and Netanyahu trying to hang on to the PM.

It can also be read in terms of American domestic politics, but by comparison, that, like the SOTU, is like monkeys flinging **** at each other.

Your argument is that one of the top 5 producers of energy in the world is able to keep its lights on in spite of sanctions?

My plan years ago would've been to bomb Iranian production facilities - hopefully without killing anyone, but also enough to do more harm to their economy than sanctions could've. It would've had the side effect of making the nighttime pictures of Iran less pretty.

The fact is that US and Israeli interests diverge on Iran.

Both have critical interest in suppressing Iran's nuclear weapons program, but limited ability to do so. Both have a critical interest in preventing Iranian dominion across the Middle east from Lebanon, Syria, Iraq through Qatar and on to Yemen. Saudi Arabia shares each of those interests as well.

But, one to one relations could benefit the US in other areas, including Afghanistan. In the long run, the US can have a good relationship (post-Mullah) with Iran, where Israel can only really view Iran as its biggest existential threat - the only regional power with the ability to send both finance and deploy personnel to its borders and the motivation to do so.

I was just looking at Netanyahu's poll numbers. He seems safe.

Parliamentary governments aren't safe or not safe based on poll numbers. I have to think that a deal between the US and Iran would make his popularity tank, and visiting Congress is at least a way to mitigate that.
