So something stupid Dick said 13 years ago makes massive fiscal deficits and debt okay today...

That's utterly moronic kids.

Maybe if the money is going to help win the Cold War, it's somewhat acceptable. But if it's going to liberal interest groups and friends of Obama .... No.

I'm still against any public debt.

Noooooooooooooooooooooo. It goes to show you that we ALL are utter hypocrits when it comes to this crap. It used to be tax and spend Democrats. Now it's Cut Taxes and Borrow Republicans vs. Hold Tax Rates and Spend Democrats.

As a group Republicans have no shame. They exploded the deficit and debt and nary a peep out of you guys. You drove the economy into the ditch and you sat "What Us?". Your explanations for the crash have been debunked. You shouldn't be allowed 5 miles from any legislative body and when people vote your ousted. The only hope the GOP has is to disenfranchise the voting public. When the public votes the GOP loses. When we have historic low voter turnout you have a good night or a wave election and then you misread your mandate. Hell the leadership in the house had to pull an abortion bill yesterday because it didn't have the votes. Do you really think the GOP was put into office to overturn Roe vs. Wade???? Is that the most important topic to Americans? Enjoy these two years because when the masses vote you'll be out on your asses.

RE: Why didn't Obama mention the 18 trillion dollar deficit last night?
Mach has a point. There IS hypocrisy from both sides on the deficit and national debt issue. Bush exploded the debt and jacked up our deficits. That fact is indisputable. Obama exploded our debt and jacked up our deficits. That fact is also indisputable. We also know that the majority of the issue is based on the large fixed costs that we have with entitlements for seniors. With the population growth dynamics changed between the baby boomers thru today's youngest generation, we are seeing less workers per retiree. It will get worse before it gets better. It appears that GenX is the weak spot from a population growth standpoint. I saw that GenY and the next generation has grown at a faster rate. This is one of the critical areas.

Another critical area is defense spending. We're reaping the benefits of what we sowed via knocking out despots/dictators who in reality kept a strong lock on their populations. Bush knocked out Saddam, Obama knocked out Mubarak, Kaddafi and Assad will be going down fairly soon. Guess who now has unfettered freedom to gin up wars for the U.S. to fight? Of course, the very people we were trying to "liberate". Bottom line is that we have taken a hands on approach to diplomacy for way, way too long. We're bleeding ourselves dry being the policemen of the world. As a country, we used to be respected by most nations because we were supposed to be different than the rest of the world powers - Europe. But when the U.S. thought it was wise to support European colonialism in WWI and to allow western Europe to reclaim their colonies after WWII... This is why the world is the way it is today.

C'mon guys...it's not that hard to understand.

The debt is the total we owe.
The deficit is the yearly amount by which expenses exceed revenues.

The debt is increasing.
The deficit is shrinking.

Exactly correct Tom. My biggest issue is when Obama stands there giving his speech and touts lowering the deficit as something he worked to achieve - he's never led the way to spending a dime less anytime anywhere.

As well - and he knows this - probably north of 60% of his base listens to his speech and walks away believing the US Government now owes less money than last year.

It's the same as when those A'holes in Washington screech about a "cut" in spending on a favorite entitlement, and what is REALLY happening is a reduction of an increase. It's a play on wording to convey an image of something that it isn't - it isn't an honest way to do business for anyone but thieves and lawyers.

I wish I could punch these clowns everytime is hear them do this - and I don't care whether an R or D is next to their name. F'cking be honest.
