Palmer with a good looking power run. McCloud keeps it on next snap for first down run.

Spring Game 2023
Sounds like defense will be strong again.

Alonza back in, called for a sack I think he might have escaped in a real game. Had one nice pass, and one that was off.

RE: Spring Game 2023
Atkins has a good series that ends in a TD run.
Helped by a PI call when the receiver got mugged.

40 yard pass from McCloud missed off the stretched fingertips of receiver. Needed about 2 more steps

Wyatt (ol) helped up/off field, hopping on one foot. Not sure how serious. Could be twisted ankle, or maybe more.

They were quick to call plays dead for sacks, most of which were plays I’d hope our starting QB could break free on.

He didn’t seem to comfortable back there to me, made some poor reads and decisions. One was a 4th and 2, he rolled right and had a ton of space to pick up the first but just kept looking downfield before chucking it into traffic and not converting. Would’ve liked to see more out of Sproles, didn’t even know he dressed until he caught a pass on the final play.

I don’t think any qb will be comfortable against our ferocious defense

Sproles had thee receptions. Because of the rules to protect QBs I expect they were instructed not to scramble. McCloud showed good footwork in the pocket and was able to move and step up to avoid pressure.

For a guy I was hoping would step in and be a #1 I honestly didn’t notice him in the game until the final play. Perhaps they were instructed not to scramble to protect the QBs from harm, but I thought it was odd when he scrambled enough to roll out near the sideline on that play. He had nobody between him and running a few yards before getting out of bounds and extending the drive. And as for the QBs, Griffis seemed like QB4 out there, not sure if it was the offense he was paired with or D he was facing, but he got swallowed up numerous times.

I think that's the unfortunate part of playing offense vs. defense instead of "drafting" the entire team in two like most schools do. Griffis was likely with the guys who would be scout team players, whereas the other 3 had guys who were starters or in the rotation playing against a mix of a defensive unit.
Not saying the way other teams do it make it easier, but I don't think the format used yesterday did most of the QBs any favors. But as coach has said, expect some roster and lineup changes between now and the start of camp. A lot of key guys also sitting yesterday/ on limited reps makes it interesting to tell true performance.

Agree, though there is still a lot of time between now and September. I think part of this is the returning QBs have had more time and reps in the system. Griffis probably needs another year under his belt to develop. Tons of potential, but doesn't look ready yet.
It looked to me like the competition for QB1 comes down to McCloud vs Barnett. Based purely on spring game, McCloud looks to have more deep strike ability, and a lot of athleticism. Barnett may have a better grasp of the system, and looked pretty smooth on the first series. Didn't see quite the same level of passing, but he executed well and could move the ball.
McCloud reminds me of Centeio last year in spring. Between now and fall the entire team will continue to improve. The defense could be scary good, I think the secondary and LBs will light opponents up. Liked what I saw on offense also, the RBs and WRs have a lot of potential.

I was thinking the same thing. It will be interesting to see what happens over the summer and Fall camp, but it would be a mild surprise if McCloud doesn’t get the start as QB1.
