I16 between Savannah and Macon is the greatest misuse of federal $ in the country's history. The story is the typical local politician having too much influence over the route and pushed the track south closer to his home town of Soperton Ga, population 100, creating the most desolate stretch of four lane highway in America. 10 or 15 miles north would have been slightly better passing closer to Swainsboro and Statesboro. The 30 miles between Savannah and Statesboro is much of the same with only one opportunity, about half way, for a break. Plans are in the works to 4 lane 67 from 16 to the Boro still a couple years away but should make the last leg a bit more bearable.

At least from Macon you have Dublin. However, Dublin -> Statesboro and Statesboro -> Savannah is pretty damn bad.

Georgians are historically a fiercely independent people hense the 157 counties. When the interstates were being built, the towns along the route didn't want them within 10 miles of the city limits. Many of the towns have grown toward the interstates over the years, but what you saw is representative of South Georgia and the abundance of pine forests and cultivated land. Coastal Georgia has its own flavor including a fair share of transplanted Yankees wearing their socks and sandals. If you like 6-lane traffic with interchanges every eighth mile, visit Atlanta metro where its difficult to tell where one town ends and the next begins and bumper stickers representing Patriots, Steelers, Bears, Packers, Giants, Yankees, Mets, Red Sox are everywhere.

Glad you make the effort to look around and write about it on a working trip. Not sure if you ever made it to Savannah if you stayed around the airport - that's Pooler.

Having spent the last 10 years + in the northern suburbs of Atlanta I can tell you the I-16 ride is a blessing. I'll admit it's a bit desolate but when all you really want to do is get to where you're going the lack of traffic and distractions is welcome. What I find/found perplexing about that leg of the trip is the constant roadwork on that section...for such a lightly traveled interstate, it appears that the local (state) representatives have done an excellent job of getting pork-barrel projects for the area. I just wonder how many 'locals' have been hired to fill in the cracks in the pavement.

Oh, and I would be getting my money back from the original highway contractor for the quality of the initial work...that part of I-16 has to be the worst for upheave, cracking, and just plain poor-azz workmanship.

With the growth of the port in savannah, I'm grateful for I-16. Probably wouldn't have happened without it.

I have a love/hate relationship with I16. I love the light traffic but when traveling to Macon it is long and boring so I catch myself wanting to nod off if I'm not careful and I would HATE that.

I-16 isn't that bad fellas ...... You're making it sound like the deserts and wasteland of west Texas and New Mexico.

There's never any traffic except when cars abruptly slow down while driving through Laurens County or a mandatory evacuation for Hurricane.

Drive in Jersey and NY State at 70 miles per hour dodging pot holes, crazy audi and bmw drivers, and 18 wheelers who could care less about life.

If there was farm land all along I-16 it would be better. Those pine trees bring boredom!

I-16 is no worse than I-85 between Mongomery and Mobile. Distance between Macon and Savannah is about the same.

Driven west Texas, you are right there. You legitimately have to plan your fuel stops out there, otherwise you could get in trouble.

They also don't have actual offramps either, you just kind of fall off the interstate.

I have driven Texas and at least there are towns along the way vs unending trees for hours. I almost prefer driving I-16 at night because at least you dont notice it as much.

There are 159 counties in Georgia, but the rest of this is on target. I'd add traffic and sprawl is here on coast, too, and at times can be every bit as bad as Atlanta -- pretty much from West Chatham out to Effingham then down to Richmond Hill and it's pushing up from Florida into Kingsland and Brunswick, etc.

As for bumper stickers, yep. But add in Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, so on. I used to think it was because of Fort Stewart, and some of it no doubt is, but more and more folks who come down here and stay have no military ties whatsoever.

So, basically, we're getting slammed with mass immigration from two places -- north of the Mason-Dixon line and south of the U.S. border with Mexico.

I have family from Bulloch County that dates back to 1700's (grandma side), but grandfather was German. Most of her children and grand children moved to GA afterwards. I decided to attend GASOU from New Jersey. Was a gypsy for the last few years before I decided to come back home to Jersey. Rather live in Georgia at times, but they pay me 40% more in NJ.

Still miss my times at the Shroom, Wooden Nikel, Legends, Rum Runners etc .......... nothing like seeing LEO on 4 wheelers during Players Ball weekend

Sorry. I-16 can cure the will to live. Just like I-85 NE of Atlanta can make you kill. I travel for a living. With the exception of I-70 east of Denver into Kansas, I-16 is the worst.
