RE: SBC meetings
We need a quick decision and statement on the SBC paying cost of attendance. We have to do it and if we don't act quickly it will hurt us on recruiting the next 2 weeks.

Last time it came up, it was a near-unanimous vote to pay stipends. Seriously, we will not have to pay out a ton of money. I am sure the NCAA will allow us to include Pell Grant money, etc. as a part of our contribution. If that happens, we are really talking a LOT fewer athletes that we have to pay money/provide assistance to.

I think it will be done and for head count only. We can pay what the p5 pay without too much of a problem. It will widen the gap between us and FCS considerably and could pressure some programs to leave FCS conferences or basketball leagues that don't pay.

For once I actually agree with how this is working for the players. School is a lot more expensive than just tuition and a place to stay. As long as we don't get into paying these guys more and more and more, I don't see any issue with it. All schools that are able to do so should definitely join in on this.

What is crazy to me is that athletes did not have an unlimited meal plan until the last couple years. Athletes require so much more to eat and maintain a healthy body weight for their sports. It is almost embarrassing to think the NCAA would let the kids expend themselves to the degree that they do and then say it's a violation to give an athlete cream cheese for a bagel.

For Gawd's Sake, WAKE UP, Man . . . There 's clothes, parties, cars, women, families to "kick back" to . . The potential list of expenses is endless . . . . Tuition, books, room & board, so old school . . . .

Transportation, food for when establishments on campus that requires a meal plan are not open, emergencies. These players more than likely cannot get a job due to practice, games, travel, and class. Not very great being stuck far away from home with $0.00 to your name. I am fortunate to have been able to come up with some money during college, but not all of these athletes are quite as privileged.

So, where did the money come from for all of these athletes I see walking around Appalachian State's campus to have those $400 headphones?

I'm not saying that everybody is in the same boat, but I certainly do not agree that athletes should be paid to play on top of receiving a free education.

Welcome to the "New World" of college athletics . . . Expect the gap between the haves and have nots to widen even more . . .

I agree with you that they do not deserve to be payed for play. But being payed what the estimated cost of attendance is at the school is not a huge problem. All it should be that they receive is whatever the difference is between what they are already given in tuition, books, fees, and room/board. It might amount to a few hundred dollars over the year. In no way do I think athletes should be payed thousands of dollars in cash to play sports. That would ruin college athletics.

All well and good; however, what you're talking about is letting the "genie out of the bottle" . . . Once out, you can't put him back . .
And do you really think it'll end with the "estimated cost of attendance at the school?" It's not likely, over time the amount will more than likely rise

It will be like opening Pandora's box. I agree with the premise of the proposition. It is a great idea. Unfortunately the crooks that run college football will most likely keep piling on. Until then though, I like it.

RE: SBC meetings
I see very two different sides for the argument over being paid-for-play.

On the side agreeing that students should be paid-for-play, I can see that these athletes bring a lot of attention to the university. They are bringing eyes to a school that may not even get glimpses from others. On top of that, these athletes are practicing and taking classes while they continue to travel the country and miss a lot of in-class work. These could easily prevent them from getting part time jobs to pick up extra expenses.

On the other hand of the argument against pay-for-play is one statement that always gets me: they signed up for this. College athletes were not pushed into this lifestyle. While some may see a sports scholarship as their only was to an education, others see it as a way in which they can skate by in college and come out with a degree on somebody else's dime. When athletes agree to play for a university, they are agreeing to bring that school publicity, and in return, they are getting a four-year degree for free. On top of that, they are receiving unlimited meals, free travel, extra tutoring and, in UNC's case, a degree without having even gone to a class.

Does it suck that college athletes cannot do some things that other students can? Of course. Does that mean we should turn college sports teams into minor league franchises? Heck no. These are student-athletes, not athlete-students. Being a student comes first, so unless every other student at that university is paid, then neither should these "student-athletes". A simple way to help them cover extra costs would be for them to succeed in high school, apply for additional scholarships, and reap the benefits of being a well-educated student-athlete.

One thing to consider is where a school is located. Compare Ga Southern to Ga State. Probably cheaper in Statesboro than Atlanta. Does Southern then use this as a recruiting tool? Do we tell recruits your $200 stipend will go further here? Or does the NCAA pay differently based on cost of living?

Where does a player need to go?

Food for when establishments on campus are not open? Is that even an issue anymore with all the chains on campus these days that accept "university currency"?

What emergencies? I mean, I think they should get full health care insurance, with the university picking up the deductible, but past that, what emergencies would pop up?

You say it's not very great being stuck away from home with no money, I say you were given an opportunity to have an education that many others couldn't afford because they too had no money to their name.

An athletic scholarship should be tuition (including costs associated with books and labs), room, board, and health insurance. Because those same woes you are talking about are present with academic scholarship kids, but there's nobody championing their cause.
