Lane Kiffin set to leave Nick Saban and Alabama for the 49ers...
From the article:

Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin is a front-runner for the same position with the San Francisco 49ers, sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Didn't he say a couple weeks ago that he wanted to stay at Alabama? I can't remember, I feel like I remember that.

That's a hell of a job. I wouldn't be surprised to see him leave for that job. Being under Saban has probably been good for him.

Being Saban's OC is a short term position, anyway. He's been through several.

OTOH, trying to score points in the NFL with a regressing Kaepernick at QB might be a much bigger challenge than trying to score in the SEC with Blake Sims at QB. It would really be a feather in the cap for any OC if he could pull Kaep out of his tailspin.

How does he keep getting high profile HC jobs? He stunk at Oakland. He left Tennessee after one 7-6 season. He had Southern Cal going backwards. IIRC, he made several decisions at Southern Cal that embarrassed the university (like trying to sneak players into a game with a different jersey number??).

That's the coaching game these days. It is just as mercenary as being a professional football player is in the NFL. It is a good opportunity for him to get back out on the West Coast. Perhaps he liked it out in this direction.

My sentiments exactly. The dude's a great OC, but has proven to be a mediocre HC. It's like hiring a Will Muschamp with baggage.

I don't know what is up with you two. He didn't get hired as the HC at San Fran, they announced who got that position last week. He was hired as the OC which he deserves. As you say, as an OC he is great. As long as he only has to worry about creating an offensive game plan, then he is a great coach.

The problem I foresee with this though is that the guy San Fran hired is basically just the Yes man for the GM at San Fran. He is the only hold over from the Singletary days. He is the favorite of the GM. So how is Kiffin going to fit into that situation? It will be interesting to see.

The Bama fans have never been warm to Kiffin and I think I heard that he was being blamed for the Sugar Bowl loss. His future is not with Bama. Better off to leave.

My fault. I was reading on a iPad. The title was cut off and it would not load the link. Still, OC at SF is pretty high profile for some one with his resume.

I think he gets hired because of his wife.

Just a theory.

No H1, his daddy, Monty, knows where the bodies are buried in both the college and NFL game. Just like with has been coaches at college programs that land cushy high paying university jobs after they "retire" the positions are granted for a lifetime of silence and loyalty to the system. The only difference here is Lane inherited his protected status instead of earning it.

That's actually a reason to not believe this rumor. Tomsula has no chance of succeeding as 49ers head coach unless the players, management, and media see him as the unquestioned leader. His coordinators need to be lower-profile guys who are no threat to be seen as the real "brains behind the operation" or "power behind the throne" or whatever cliche you like. It would be dumb to hire Kiffin or any other "name" guy with a high profile as a 49ers coordinator - but obviously the 49ers have done dumb things in the very recent past, so I guess it's a possibility.

I heard this a lot from other Bama fans this year and would always remind them. Lane Kiffin is not coaching defense guys. The man managed to bring the team to 16th in the nation in offense and that's huge considering the level of SEC defenses.

The level of SEC defenses proved to not be all that overwhelming this year, sorry.

The 49ers are about as dysfunctional as it gets.

Even if he did say that a couple of weeks ago or a couple of hours ago, it would have no bearing on any decision he might make Now.

Kiffen should just teach classes on how to fail upwards. Time and time again he has proven that he can do it.

He and Jimmy Fallon are masters at that. Granted Jimmy Fallon has certainly found his calling, but he also failed up his entire career before getting Late Night.
