OT: Thursday Night NFL Football Returning to CBS for 2015
From the article:

Good news, fans of mid-week football games. The NFL will continue its partnership with the CBS network to broadcast Thursday Night Football games for the 2015 season. Execs from CBS and the NFL announced the news Sunday morning.

Next season's package of Thursday Night Football games will run much like they did this year. CBS will broadcast the first eight games. Those games will be broadcast on the NFL Network simultaneously as well. CBS will produce the full 16 week slate of Thursday night games, with the broadcast team headlined by Jim Nantz and Phil Simms.

The league and CBS had a deal worth $275 million for the 2014 Thursday night package. That deal included an option for the 2015 season.

Ratings for the Thursday night game were subdued by the usual standards for prime time NFL games. The games broadcast on CBS and the NFL Network simultaneously averaged just over 16.6 million viewers, which was still more than enough to give CBS the prime time rating win on Thursdays for each game it broadcast.

8 Games for CBS and they will pay for more then a quarter of a Billion Dollars per year.

For the amount they are paying, I don't think it is sustainable for them. Get rid of it after 2015. Obviously another network will pick it up if not CBS, but at a lower price, especially if the games continue to be as bad as they've been.

Doubt it....just look at what DirecTV Paid for the exclusive rights for the Sunday Ticket...the kicker is CBS is also paying for All Production including the NFL Network Games if I am not mistaken...Fox, NBC and maybe someone like Turner will drive up the price even more

Another reason Friday will be the new Thursday for CFB. HS FB is going to have some issues about that in most states.

You'd think ESPN would shy away from Thursday night games against the NFL, but it looks like they're still going to have a full schedule of Thursday games this year.

true- but the quality of games on ESPN even last year was pretty much down compared to prior years.

Also next year- with the calendar where it is...
Opening weekend for NFL is Sept 13. So 7 Thu night games after that- Sep 17,24,Oct 1,8,15,22,29. really college football would have 3 nights where they are unopposed by CBS NFL football- nov 5,12,19. 26th is Thanksgiving.

Wouldn't be shocked if we see some games with CBS in Oct where both teams are coming off of their byes. Really could be the last 4 weeks of CBS package. That could give the NFL the chance to schedule stronger games on Thursday nights.

the 7 ESPN games that went up against CBS TNF averaged 1.86 million....
last year those 7 games got 2.11 million.

by comparison-
2013- NFL TNF got 9 million viewers per game
2014- NFL TNF on CBS got 16.1 million viewers

so yeah, TNF isn't going anywhere. Just stupid to say that CBS wasn't pleased with the ratings. Even if the matchup sucks- fantasy and gambling help drive ratings.

If that's the case, then ESPN will keep showing Thursday games. Those are far better numbers than ESPN could get showing anything else in that window.

true but not going to be putting up stellar games there....

one thing that will be different is 1 fewer week of college football next year so 1 fewer bye for all teams. more teams playing weekly

Its part of the contracts with the ACC and Pac 12. The question is what happens in the mid-20s when these contracts expire. It may go back to the G5 and an occasional ACC game like it was for a few years.

I don't know about the ACC or Big 12, but with the Pac-12, ESPN and Fox could ask for all of the weeknight games on Friday if they wanted to. But they're still picking Thursday for most of them.

The money is not bad. If you prorated it to a full season, it is still less than half what ESPN pays for Monday Night Football and considerably less than NBC pays for Sunday Night football . Plus it keeps another network from having it and destroying their Thursday Night lineup, plus it allows them to keep their mantra as the top rated network.

If anything I think what they may change in the future is having to have their number one crew work every week. that will wear them out in time.

It's pretty simple if you ask me. People complain about the long season. Add the extra bye week and have these teams get 8-9 days of rest sandwiched around the TNF game. You add another weekend window without diluting the product and allow players to rest up more over the course of the season. I get that it hurts the Sunday brand with double bye weeks and less games per day, but this would be negligible. The short rest has made for unwatchable games.

well by looking at the tv ratings that CBS got, it's pretty damn obvious that those games aren't unwatchable. People are watching.

They had a two bye week season back in the 90's. It doesn't bode well.

They have to either start the season on Labor Day weekend, something neither the NFL or college football want, or remove the week between the Championship games and the Super Bowl, or push the super Bowl into mid February (which also means more late season weather issues).

Playing the Super Bowl the week after the conference title games is the right way to go. The NFL is just too pigheaded to do it.

I don't disagree. But since that is really not an option.....

Actually I am okay with the off week. Perfect spot for the Royal Rumble.
