Everytime the camera pans the lower non-student section of the bowl, it looks like everyone is in pain and would rather be somewhere else. I understand that these people are higher end season ticket holders, but I don't see how a team can get any energy from that crowd. They don't cheer, they never participate in theme nights, they don't stand up, they rarely clap, hell, they rarely even smile. Yes, they did cheer at the very end, but I guess they should have plent of energy by then, since haven't moved during rest of the game.

Some of this was hilarious...sad & true, but hilarious.

What the hell game were you watching?

It's embarrassing how well I fit your accurate description of the lower-bowl fans. In a (half assed) defense of us social security folks, I'll say that we have been around long enough to know what good, intense Toledo basketball looks like and this ain't it. Also, we know that being a better basketball coach than Gene Cross isn't good enough. If this team played like a well-coached group, we would jump out of our walkers and cheer like crazy (unless we're in the bathroom - gotta be a little careful about jumping up there).

Jawuan Howard JR. (Detroit), and John Stainbrook (Xavier) were part of the WMU b-ball program at one time. They did not fit in well with S. Hawkins team concept, and philosophy, thus transferring... That would be some team if they got those players to stay, and adhere to what their coach expected of them...

I sit in the lower bowl section and I am always clapping, standing, and cheering when the Rockets do well. I stood up and cheered after each of JD's dunks. I stood up after several other great plays that the Rockets made. I was jumping up and down after they tied the game at the end of regulation. I participated in the White Out as well. I understand what you are saying about the fans in the lower bowl, but I don't fall into that category.

What the hell game were you watching?

I was at the game featuring The University of Toledo Rockets vs. the Western Michigan University Broncos at Savage Arena on Saturday, 1/17. It was an OT game that was decided by only 3 pts. I guarantee you that almost anyone would say an OT game decided by 3 pts, regardless of who won, was an exciting game. There were 6 ties and 10 lead changes, with the largest lead for either team never being 10+. If you don't call that an exciting game, then you'll never see an exciting game.

Did we play a great game? No. But that doesn't mean it was not an exciting game.

Now I could write a three paragraph editorial on here, but I'm not. Just really, really disappointing!!!!!!!

None of them were in to the game, either. When the basketball team entered - with the fight song playing - before the game, none of the football players cared. No one stood. No one clapped. No one cheered. Even after 1 of JD's dunks, I looked over, and no one from the football even reacted.

I'll offer the observation that I've seen the hoopsters heading through the student gates at halftime of many football games. Waaaaaayyyy back, the football team got a cheering section together and sat in the end zone at the Field House and basically went off on the other team for forty minutes. Some of you will remember OU's Denny Rusch, maybe the toughest, most hot-tempered player in MAC history, calling out the entire football team to fight him. I think he drew a T or got ejected. 6'8" and maybe 230 with a Lyle Lovett hairdo. That football team supported the hoops guys like crazy. The Field House could get very loud but even then the non-student side needed prodding. BTW, I don't fit that profile either.

RE: What a game!
Defense and free throws cost the Rockets last night's game. The early season losses to teams UT had no business losing to were warning signs of what's happening. Need to right the ship now. Not enough fight in the dog right now.

RE: What a game!
tough loss, good game, western was clearly playing better team ball, but we have so many guys that can make difficult shots that we can hang with most anyone.

the frustrating thing is this team hasn't developed that angry will to win that leads to championships. nobody seems 100% bought in. lots of fun players to watch, it will be sad as a fan to see jd and juice go. my hope is that coach k can find a way to get them to peak down the stretch.

on a related note. the schedule set up nicely for fans and crowds. we get bg at home next and then a wed home game with miami (who always brings the fans out). the road schedule toughens up with kent buffalo and akron coming up on the road, but this team plays as well on the road as at home, so i'm not scared. just want us to play better team ball.

RE: What a game!
H2O Rocket...the answer to the lack of each team rooting for and causing havoc at the game is a simple answer...Carter East. Back in the day when we lived together, ate together, drank together and were friends you really cared about other teams. Today with the athletes being on their own, there is no true relationship other than they are in the same Athletic Department. Sad change but it is what it is. If you remember, that is how UT had male cheerleaders well before it was in. In fact Mayor Bell was one of those in the old fieldhouse days. The rubber chicken on a rope came out at a BG game and never left as I remember. Ahhhh the good old days.

We are a team that will finish in the middle of the pack. This team does not play together. WMU's coach put on a coaching clinic, on how to run the back door screen. To bad UT coaches had no idea on how to stop it. This team is not very good, next year will be worst. Look for coach K to bug out of town.

Unfortunately, I think FrickerRon is on to something. This just doesn't seem like our year...for the 35th straight year :bang head: When's the last time we've had a player in the NBA?? Honestly, I don't think there's been one in my lifetime. Just not much history in our program so it's hard to become elite even just in our little league. How we haven't won a MAC title in 35 years is beyond disturbing. The MAC...35 year drought...come on.

Casey Shaw. Played 9 games for the Sixers in 98-99.

Toledo will have a hard time recruiting them away from Dana's coaching brothers:

Scott Drew, Head Coach at #21 Baylor.

Bryce Drew, Head Coach at Valparaiso where their father Homer Drew was Head Coach for decades.
