Atlanta must be doing pretty well to be able to build a $1 billion dollar stadium when they still have the Georgia dome. What are the 'bed taxes' the writer is talking about.

That said, yeah, that design is pretty slick. I guess since they don't have to fund the Thrashers anymore they can dump more into the Falcons.

Amazing looking stadium.

Astonishing price tag. I sincerely hope no public money is going towards this.

Awesome stadium. It should make the Peach Bowl the most coveted of the New Year's Six. Atlanta will certainly get its money's worth out of it.

8x Atlanta Falcons
6x Georgia State Panthers
17x Atlanta MLS expansion team
1x Peach Bowl
1x Chick-fil-A Kickoff
2020 Final Four

The great bulk of it is coming from the Falcons. The NFL is chipping some amount, and Atlanta is funding about $200M through a hotel tax on visitors, IIRC. No local tax money, AFAIK, but not certain.

What happened to the old rule that MLS teams were supposed to have their own stadium?

The 'Bed Tax' is an addition fee charged to hotels/motels and rental cars. This tax was used to finance the Georgia Dome which cost around $280 Million dollars when it opened in 1992. The tax was set to expire as the bonds for the current venue will be paid by 2016 if I recall correctly. As such, the city of Atlanta contribution 'on paper' for the new stadium hasn't changed that much and the $200 million the city is on the hook for will be financed via the same tax. Blank's contribution is $700 million will the NFL chipped in $100 million dollars as well.

Where the city is really taking in the shorts is that all of the infrastructure changes (new roadwork, property procurement, sewer and electrical relocations) all fall under it's purview. That combined with the fact that unlike the Georgia Dome, which is owned by the State of Georgia, this new facility and all of the ancillary events hosted therein will prove to be a lucrative windfall for Arthur Blank.

Arthur Blank is ******* us coming and going, that's how we're building that stadium. Hopefully it will be empty when it opens.

My sentiments exactly. It's sickening that cities are handing out hundreds of millions of dollars for no reason to people who are already billionaires. That's why I haven't watched an NFL game in 3 years (except for Thanksgiving day when other people have the remote).

Don't think its a rule as much of a business decision.
Seattle's MLS team plays in the Seahawks stadium. Thing about that is they actually get 40k or more regularly.

An impressive structure that should rival Jerry World. Aint nothing wrong with the Georgia Dome though and I hate how these f'ing owners continue to bamboozle cities into building these behemouths.

I can only imagine the sh*tstorm that Dan Snyder is going to put forth when he decides the Skins need to play inside DC again (which they should tbh). I hope he threatens to move the franchise and the DC council says "go ahead". We'd get another NFL team back, one that couldn't possibly be as dysfunctional as the current circus.

Did you notice in the video that traffic was moving on all the streets around the new stadium. Anyone that lives in Atlanta or has ever traveled to Atlanta know better than this. TRAFFIC DOES NOT FLOW FREELY.
