Nope. Crappy roads, Crappy public schools. Tons of homeless people suffering on the street.

Ponce De Leon baby... I own a condo in the old fourth ward... Atlanta is rough. No business spending taxpayer money on this stadium...it also caused the braves to move north...and out of Atlanta.

Actually, it is stone age. Ball bearing tracks. it works just like the aperture in your camera does. It looks complex, but it is actually quite simple. The only real difficulty is making sure they meet tight manufacturing tolerances. Even 1 degree off level and you're talking thousands of pounds of weight wanting to break free from the roof.

Atlanta must be doing pretty well to be able to build a $1 billion dollar stadium when they still have the Georgia dome. What are the 'bed taxes' the writer is talking about.

Nope. Crappy roads, Crappy public schools. Tons of homeless people suffering on the street.

I can agree that there might be better ways to spend the money, though at least we know for sure that these funds are going to exactly what they are earmarked for. Which is completely different than most ATL tax money. That being said, if you think Atlanta is rough now you must not have been within the city limits during the 80's and 90's. There aren't even any projects within the city limits today.

Is there something going on the mean streets of Ponce and Druid Hills Country Club that I'm not aware of? If you think it's rough now, you should have seen it in the early 90's.

So your assessment of Atlanta is based on your experience in ONE rapidly gentrifying neighborhood.. That there is expertise. I am not sure you would like to see a truly rough neighborhood or city.

So is Ga State bringing their 500 fans to this thing, or is that Turner Field deal going through?

The Falcons are paying $1.2B of the cost themselves, and the city and county are paying $200M, plus the annual operating and maintenance costs. The city's part is being 100% funded by a 7% hotel-motel and rental car tax on visitors. The Georgia Dome will be razed, swapping places with the new stadium and serving as parking.

That's correct except I believe the total cost is 1.2 billion and 200 million is coming from the City. That's 200 million that could be applied to a multitude of other things, like infrastructure. The other billion will come from things like $40,000 seat licenses.

It originally was estimated at $1.2B. Newer estimate put it at $1.4B, with the Falcons putting up the extra $200M.

The other $200M is coming from BOTH the city and county, b/c the 7% hotel-motel and rental car tax is being collected county-wide, not just in the city.

And you can't really say the $200M could be better spent on infrastructure, b/c there is no guarantee that proposal would have passed a council vote and generated the 7% visitor surcharge, in the first place.

And of course, the $1.2B coming from the Falcons is going to be paid by the fans who buy tickets and merchandise, plus other revenue streams available to any NFL team.

I did not say rough. I said the city has roads in need of repair.. homeless in need of shelter...

If you thinks your tax money is better spent on a new stadium replacing a perfectly good stadium...then it's fine by me.

What city doesn't have those--and many more--issues? That said, it does seem ridiculous that the Dome is already going to the wrecking ball but that is how municipalities and sports franchises work outside of California, where you're lucky if you get a nickel in funding.

Partly at play here is that we are city that serves as a poster child for poorly run pro franchises. Arthur is trying to keep up with the Joneses...literally. The practicality of tearing down a really great stadium doesn't even enter into this. The sad part is that with the PSL prices they are talking about, the average Joe is getting priced out of the equation. The crowd atmosphere is going to be more wine and cheese like Levi Stadium and less raucous home field advantage like Baltimore or Green Bay. I a really glad that we get our own OCS out of this series of clusters. I just imagine there will be more fans at the Falcons stadium paying attention to the waitress getting their order right than cheering loudly. By the way, the same thing happened when the Braves moved from Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium to Turner Field. The former was a blast with loud fans especially when the Padres or Dogers were in town. Turner Field was never like that.

If you have solutions for Atlanta's homeless problem then congratulations, youngest to go to the head of the class. And I don't think anyone is ok with that $200M going to the Falcons. As for bad streets, congratulations you purchased a condo in the Old Fouth Ward. The potholes are a free bonus.04-cheers At any rate the hotel and motel tax has been available for years and you still had potholes and homeless people so Arthur stealing that money has no direct effect on the problems you mentioned.

1x Chick-fil-A Kickoff
2020 Final Four

Yep... that is, what, 33 days of activity? Plus some concerts?

That'll pay for itself in, say, 150 years.

The convention trade is more worthwhile for the Georgia Dome/New Atlanta Stadium - book 5 conventions that are a week long, and that matches the number of days the sports tenants provide.

Even the SEC Championship Game has a few days of related activities, and that uses up convention space as well.
