Demand that he get involved. The lady who answers the phone really does not like UAB people, so that's a bonus. Every call puts sand in her shorts.

Yep. She was a richardhead to me the day of the announcement when I called.

When I call back, I'm going to be the richardhead before she can.

RE: Phone bomb the Governor's office
I've been watching this play out from the outside looking in, and it is utterly fascinating. A month ago, I never would have believed this was possible. If you were to read this in a book, you'd dismiss it as being too unbelievable.

On top of everything else, the Board of Trustees names their own replacements.

If you want someone's opinion that admittedly is not immersed in this like the many of you are, the university president is just a fall guy. I don't know if he's a schmuck who was given a directive and went along with it without fully realizing what he was doing, or if he was complicit to it the entire time. It doesn't matter, though. Either way, I believe him to be a symptom of the real problem and not the cause of the real problem.

I would suggest storming the gates of the governor's mansion. Insist that the constitution be amended. If he doesn't listen, get a recall vote in motion. The notion that a Board of Trustees of a major research university that hundreds of millions in federal funding, which is overseen by the governor, would have so many untrustworthy people on it is no small matter. What if that funding goes away? I mean, are organizations like the NIH going to want to continue to provide that high volume of funding to a place that has a president who's faculty have openly and publicly denounced? Are they going to want to give that volume of money to an organization who's Board of Trustees, at best, not trustworthy, and probably most accurately crooks?

I was interested from afar because of the impact it would have on college sports, and how it could impact current and future conference realignment. I had no idea what I was getting in to. This really is unbelievable, and sports are merely a small piece of the issue. The real issue is that the trustees cannot be trusted. It's the governor that oversees that. He's the one that needs to be put to the flame, here.

In all seriousness and with all sincerity, I wish all of you the best of luck.

One problem Bryant Jr was a big campaign donor for Governor Bentley. He even helped run his campaign.

Thanks David. Always amazes me that people like you can so accurately describe the proceedings from a distance while people in our own state don't see it.

David, Bentley got elected because he was Bear Bryant's dermatologist. It's far worse then you yet know here.

David, I'm glad to see people on the outside recognize what we UAB people know. It confirms that we aren't skewed by our green and gold colored glasses. We are actually getting screwed and people see it.

Yes. If the guvna was questioned quite a bit about it from the media he may make an ass out of himself again.

I thought the same thing when I saw this thread. And coming from BandDad, all I could envision was a guy with an eyepatch on a pirate ship (wearing purple scrubs) sending canons from a pirate ship from the Alabama River..... lol

Phone bomb the Governor's office
As the fight moves to Montgomery, we will need to get a lot more #freeUAB stuff visible in the community (tshirts, yard signs, bumper stickers etc).

Are you serious? He ran on the platform that he was Bear Bryant's dermatologist....and won?

There is no how-to manual on how to respond to this. It has never happened before as far as I know. Seriously, this is insane. I've never heard of, or even thought of it as being a plausible reality, that a president and a group of university trustees would basically sabotage their own university. It's preposterous.

If the governor won't do anything about it, and pressure cannot be put on him to be removed, then I really don't know what the proper recourse is. If any.

It's clearly and grossly unethical. In fact, it's so preposterous it's actually comical. I mean, what's the encore? Are they going to run the numbers and decide that the faculty senate is no longer sustainable? Will the board members come out and support that decision as well?

You're not going to like this, but if I'm a conference, ANY conference, I want no part of UAB. According to the NCAA, the university president is ultimately who is in charge. The athletic directors are merely advisors who the presidents entrust much of the decision making to. Who wants a school in their league with a guy who does things like this?

I don't know what to say. I'm really sorry. It's unbelievable. It really is.

It wasn't his platform, but it was how he got into the good ol' boy system and got funding.

Paul Bryant Jr was the chairman of Bentley's re-election campaign committee.
